Re: Shopping around for homeowners...
Good luck finding a company who will write one. We finally went with state farm but had to switch our cars to them too..
A lot of companies aren't writing because LI is "due for a big hurricane". I had about 7 companies tell me that same line.

I got a quote from state farm, geico, and all state...
Geico was the highest...
Im happy with Geico car insurance and would rather not switch, but state farm rate dropped a big chunk if we switched our cars to them...
The only company (so far) who gave me the hurricane schpeel was travelers...

switch your cars, they are terrible!! we just had 2 car accidents where we were rear-ended, police even wrote the reports to support it and they still are deeming it our fault (one of which we were just driving along and the lady even admitted to turning around to help her child and she stepped on the gas!!). after a lot of research, Geico car ins is so cheap because they NEVER pay for claims, they make it your fault so you pay your deductible then they raise your rates. you also have no rep, so when you have an accident you don't have anyone to represent you or fight for your rights!
As for homeowners, I have Utica First. they weren't expensive.
we are in the market for new car ins for 4 cars, our boat and I am willing to switch my home just so I am in one place. Utica only takes your cars if you pay the premium for 1 year up front. I didn't want to do that so I am going to try and get some other quotes

Re: Shopping around for homeowners insurance...
I did this last year and contacted Liberty Amica and State Farm.
Got the best rates from Liberty.
FYI dont bother with All state, they are dropping approx 25% of their HO in the tri state area to lower their risk. We were dropped last year after 4 years with them with never one claim. We had our cars with them too and took the cars to Liberty as well. Also I wont even tell you how much our rates for HO with All State went up in the previous 3 years it was sick!
ETA: Geico outsources their HO (at least I know that did that in the past) You will always get better rates if you bring the cars too. When we switched last year, we got HO, increased coverage, umbrella (we didnt have with AS) car, jewelery rider, and something else, all for less than we were paying for JUST our HO and 2 cars.

Re: Shopping around for homeowners insurance...
I have had Liberty for my homeowners for years now. Never had any issues. Of course never put in any claims either.
They love me because I carry a $5000 deductable. So no stupid claims. My rates are dirt cheap because of this too.
I am actually switching my cars to them and adding umbrella.
I currently have GEICO for my cars. Switching the cars to Liberty, I am saving $450 off the yearly auto premium. I then get an additional 10% off my homeowners which saves me another $80.
I wanted to add Umbrella to my insurance, and with all the savings I am getting by combining policies, the $360 yearly Umbrella premium is basically paid off (like getting free umbrella). And I still save some.
I really liked GEICO as a car insurance. Had them for almost 20 years. But these savings are too good to pass up.

Re: Shopping around for homeowners insurance...
we had a horrible time until we went with insurance guy/broker/salesman not sure what they are called but he went through getting all the quotes from different companies etc. We got a really good price through Interboro I believe it is 865 per year...
