Re: can we talk doggy doors?
Haven't used them, so no advice -- but they make doogy doors for sliding glass doors:

You don't need a "real" back door.
ETF not one but two typos

Re: can we talk doggy doors?
We have a doggie door for our sliding glass door. It is a panel that slides in. Pet Safe Patio Panel door
Our dog loves it, but we should have gotten the large tall because Bella has to bend down to use it... It's nice because you can take it out when you go away.

Re: can we talk doggy doors?
we have an automatic doggie door.... hershey wears a special collar & when he gets close to the door it opens & shuts right behind him
we installed it in the wall right next to the side door... a little pricey, but TOTALLY worth every penny!!
the only con is that our cat tries to follow him out the door lol

Re: can we talk doggy doors?
We also have one of the sliding glass door ones. So - it exits to the backyard, and installation was easy.
The huge pro is obviously that the dogs can let themselves out, but I also like the fact that it's removeable, so we didn't have to cut a hole in the wall.
Cons would be that it narrows the width of the door opening when people want to walk in and out. We generally end up just taking it out if we're going to have a lot of people over who aren't used to it, or if we need to carry large objects out to the yard.
