Re: lindamood-bell learning process

I was trained in the program back in 94... {gasp}Chat Icon . I had just graduated with my MS and wanted to move to Boston. I trained with them as a summer job while looking for a position.

I only worked there for about 8 weeks or so. I don't remember too much about the program, more about the students I worked with. They were pretty successful teaching non-reading adults how to read (this was the most amazing and rewarding part for meChat Icon ) because they used for lack of a better term, "non-sense" words instead of sight words to teach reading. They didn't want them to just memorize the sight words, rather be able to sound them out. I also worked with a few average to above average students on visualization techniques where they would listen to a long passage that I read aloud, they would visualize the details of the passage and through recalling their visuals be able to memorize the passage and recite it back to me.

The pay wasn't great but I do remember it was very, very expensive for the clients. Seventeen years ago it was about $100 for a 50 minute session.

I am wondering because I am a teacher and a mother asked me to call them ( back in september) to get info from them . When I finally spoke to the women I was wondering what is this? Are these certified teachers? She was talking about visualization as if it was never used before and I am thinking is thi even a certified teacher? Psychologist? Who is this person telling me stuff that is just obvious?

Thanks!

I went to a training this summer. I think part of my problem was that I am a public school special education teacher and the trainer never worked in a public school. She was selling her program that she has only ever used in a clinical setting. She was teaching us about the visualization program, which good teachers already include in reading instruction. However, the program required an obscene amount of time dedicated to it each day. This would not be feasible in my ID classroom, nor did I think some of the strategies were the be all and end all. That's sort of what I thought. The parents act as though this is like the top people in education and I am Like ????
