DBQs

Anyone have any good strategies for working on DBQs with my Resource Room students?

Right now they just keep saying "What should I write next?" and expecting me to spoon feed them the entire essay.

Any idea how I can help them outline it? They've NEVER written one before! All they want to do is rush through it, get it done, and have me tell them what to write!

In case you can't tell, I'm half frustrated, but at the same time seeking something that might help them!

TIA!

They're in 9th grade. A graphic organizer would be very helpful if you think it could work for 9th graders. Thank you!

Re: DBQs

I would start by helping them just analyzing documents. Library of Congress has a great digital library and "Observe-Reflect-Question" worksheet.

link to worksheet

take one document - observe (what do you see, what dor you read, etc) reflect (what do you think about that one observation) and question (What questions do you have about the documents)

this exercise forces them to slow down and analyze the document.

Here is a link to LOC lessons for documents.
