i just weighed my pug
and he's 3 pounds overweight!!! I know that DH and I gained a few pounds since getting married in July but I didnt know our little one was affected too!!
He already eats very well (I'm going to reduce his food intake a bit) and I plan on walking him more than I currently do.
What are your ideas for weightloss? Oh my poor little sausage!!!!!!

Re: i just weighed my pug
My vet had me reduce food and supplement what she's missing with string beans. My dog is 1/2 pug and she gets 1/2 cup of dog food in the morning, 1/2 cup of dog food in evening +1/3 of a can of string beans.
The string beans are a good filler to keep them full so you don't feel like you are starving him.. but keeps from overeating and helps shed pounds.
I stock up on the "no salt added" canned string beans (don't buy ones with salt) when they go on sale 5/$3 or you can get a big bag of frozen ones and toss a handful as needed.
Side note, my dog lost her weight but I still give them to her... she LOVES the string beans so much I cant bear to take them away from her now

Make him walk more! Good exercise for both of you!!!
I know my pit gained so much weight when I was on my HM. My friend who was dog sitting massively overfed her! Her tummy is like a barrel. LOL!

Re: i just weighed my pug
I have two pugs...they are beasts of eaters and would eat anythingand everything not nailed down. with that said, my one pug is about 5 pounds over weight. we have them on reduced calorie diet and try to exercise them a lot...pugs are prone to obesity. No table food!!!!!

Re: i just weighed my pug
i called my vet and they said to reduce his food intake and increase exercise. If that doesnt work after a few weeks, i need to explore changing his food to a higher fiber one...watch out, its time for a new regimen joey!!

Re: i just weighed my pug
How much does he weigh? We used to have a pug and he got all the way up to about 32 pounds at one point We basicaly reduced his portions and stopped giving him snacks and people food and he lost a little weight, but was always a chubber.
I pugs.

Makes sense, it's how we're supposed to lose weight too. I know there's a general apathy about animal weights but the PP was right about how it affects their bodies and is harder on them than you think. I think it's great that you're working on it now and doing what's right for him.

Re: i just weighed my pug
Forgot to say - I agree with fruits and veggies as treats instead of bagged ones. You should look at all bagged treats like potato chips. It's junk food and although they love it, it doesn't help them at all.
If you google the fruits and veggies first, you'll find which ones are poisonous and which ones are safe. We give our dogs a banana every night but have also given them cored apples (apple seeds are poisonous), snap peas, green beans and carrots.

thanks thats a good idea about the fruit and veggies for the treats. DH bought him a huge bag of pupperoni at BJs which i was not happy about but we rarely give him treats anyway.
did i mention that the vet also said it could be his "age" (he's 6 aka 49!!)
btw he weighs 23 pounds.

Re: i just weighed my pug
We have a whole cache of really special things that we only take out when they're really really good or really really bored. The BJ's stuff could be that for you, since it probably doesn't expire anytime soon.
Mici, the dogs love melon too! And since watermelon is mostly water anyway, they think they're getting something SO special when it's actually not bad for them at all.
Brinkley's birthday is coming up. You're giving me ideas of all the special things we could make for him.
