Spin-off to Holiday Gift for teachers
If you contribute to the class gift, do you but something else n your own? And if so, how much do you usually spend?

I do. I go anywhere from $10-$20 on my own. This Christmas, each teacher (DD has 2 and DS has one) will get a Vera zip around wallet that I got on sale for $15.

I'm curious from a teachers perspective what they prefer: If parents just contributed more $$ to the class gift or small gifts from 30 students plus a GC from the whole class. If I was a teacher I'm not sure if I'd want THAT many smaller gifts? But I know it's the thought that counts

We give $ twice a year- once for holidays and second for end of school year. 99% of the ime I get something else and spend no more than $15. The parent's contribution has always been less than $10 and it includes the teacher's aid.

Yes, we contribute $35 for teacher gifts (it gets pooled and divvied up for all the teachers, including special areas) and then we buy them a little something. I would say I spend $10 for her teacher and $5 for each assistant and special area teacher.
Last year, I bought these gorgeous little jewelry boxes in Pier 1, it was $15 for three of them. I wrapped them separately for the assistants and put a piece of jewelry in it for the teacher, then Old Navy had fleece gloves and scarves on sale for $2 each, so I bought each special area teacher gloves and a scarf.

Rach - I'd be curious from a teacher's point of view, do you think gift certs are too impersonal? I always assumed teachers get a ton of trinkets so I didn't want to add to their pile.

I always contribute to the class gift and buy an individual gift that is from ME, not my child. I like the teacher to know how much I appreciate him or her.
My 2 cents as a teacher, I far prefer GCs. Last year I got a doll made from toilet paper. I would've preferred a $5 DD GC.

This is my first year w/ DD in school; they make us chip in for the teachers & I plan on doing a $15 gc for head teacher & maybe $10 for assts.
As a teacher I'd always prefer the gift cards. You'd be surprised how nice it is to have those $10 DD or Starbucks certificates on the way to work each morning. Personally I could do w/o the trinkets.

I love getting gift cards, I think it's so nice and it's nice to be able to buy myself something.
But some of the best gifts I've ever gotten were actual items, too. Like I have beautiful Christmas ornaments in the shape of various instruments, personalized stationary, etc.
But gift cards are always great to get!

the GC from the class is so thoughtful and generous....and the small gifts from the class are thoughtful and so incredibly sweet. The kids are so proud to give you a gift...it's really heartwarming. However, alot of times there are so many that after years of teaching you don't know what to do with all the candles, etc. I have so many ornaments (which I truly love) and other "teacher" items, that I think a small gift card (dunkin donuts, Borders, 7-11, etc.) are really great ideas.
ETA: I think some great "gift" ideas are personalized stationary, notepads, gc to teacher store, Borders Gc to buy books for the classroom. Those are always things that I LOVE getting and put to good use.

for my DD who is in preschool we contribute $10 (10 kids) if doing a joint gift and for DD who is in 1st it would be $5 (20 kids).

yes, I always give a separate gift as well.
Last year I gave Ella's teachers GC for spa pedicures at the holidays ($50), and flowers with GCs to the movies at the end of the year ($35).
I haven't come up with a plan for this year yet. The joint gift collected $40per child ($20 for each teacher x13), and is buying them each spa gift certificates .
I probably won't be as generous with Erik's nursery school teachers since he's only there 4hrs/week.

Wow, $40 per child is a lot! Not that the teachers don't deserve it but at our school they won't allow that probably based on a lot of factors. (Well, technically, the class parent has to state a max of $10 per child and that it's a voluntary contribution on the letter to parents). Parents can give more if they choose I guess because the letter doesn't say you can't!

My son went to the same school as Lisa's daughter. It's a very small private preschool and the parents make their own rules.
