Morning routine/leaving the house with 2 kids...

Ahhh...some mornings I do OK, but others, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I do EVERYTHING the night before. Sunday night I have all fresh stuff packed for daycare. I lay out their clothes for the week.
Sippy cups for Colin - made.
A.M. juice and snack traps of cheerios for the morning - made.
Truck packed the night before.

And then it never fails. This morning we were golden. Coats on we were heading out the door - on time, a few minutes early.
Ryan yells his belly hurts.
I ask him if he has to poop. Yes. Of course he does.
I get him on the potty and let him work on that while I miss a train.
He does some. Says he's done. We get coat back on, head out the door.
He says he has more. I put him back on the potty - he's yelling that he wants to wear his pants, not his underpants.
He wants to go commando essentially Chat Icon Chat Icon
We switch underpants - apparently the other ones were too small he says. I guess the elastic was tight. They're 4T Chat Icon

Now I already missed trains. It's 8:40 and breakfast at daycare is around 8:30 so I give them breakfast at home.

So, I got to work a bit before 11AM this morning - once again. Chat Icon

No one says anything to me, but I know what they all think. How I can't really do my job, or don't give a sh!t anymore b/c I have 2 kids at home. And they're mostly right.

I guess I'm just venting. Hoping for other working moms that bring 2 to daycare and then commute into the city to share their little "get out of the house secrets". Should I dress them the night before and let them sleep in their clothes for daycare so it's one less thing? Chat Icon

He doesn't really poop there, but he was saying his stomach hurt so I didn't really have the option to say, "just hold it for 10-minutes" Chat Icon

I know it's hard. I have one toddler and it's not easy. I do the same thing... everything ready the night b4. DH has been on LI during the week for work so it's me and Mason in the mornings. He hates getting his jacket on so that's a fight and then we're off. This morning I was actually running early and the fact that I got his coat on was great. I got to daycare too early (they didn't open yet) so we played his music in the car to entertain him.

Mondays are always the worst because I have to bring in the formula, all the bibs and clothes that came back during the week (laundry is only done on the weekends so we have to replenish day care's supply) and now Luke just started cereal so add that to the mix...

I loaded up my stroller last night. I was so proud that I was ahead of the game..

Until DH let DD put on her Snow White dress this morning. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We had such a FIGHT to get it off... in the end I decided to just leave.. and DD didn't have her shoes on. I had them in my hands but there was no way I was getting close enough for those flailing legs to get kicked. I still don't know how I managed to get her coat on, but I did. It took all of my strength to buckle her into the stroller (she had no d@mn shoes on and I wasn't having her jump out on the cold, wet concrete in her socks) and then she screamed the rest of the way there that she didn't want to be buckled.

She took her socks off about a block before we reached the day care.

I was ready for bed at 8:30 am.

Ironically, I would have been at work on time... but some S.O.B. pulled the emergency brake so my train was late.

My saving grace is probably that DH is NOT home in the morning (he leaves about 6AM). He would probably throw my whole routine off Chat Icon

this mornign - as i am loading the car and my son my dog decides that he is not going to sit in the back and jumps in the fron with his muddy paws and then into the backseat and then finally into the driver seat

Re: Morning routine/leaving the house with 2 kids...

I've never had a problem with getting Sean out of the house ..........but I feel like 1 kid is cake compared to having to coordinate getting 2 kids out of the hosue, plus myself ..........

Can you start your attempt out the door a little earlier? - It doesn't sound like there's much more you can do as far as being 'prepared' - KWIM? How can you tell a kid telling you his stomach hurts that he can't go to the bathroom?? -

I take the 7:14, and with Sean, I can get him out of the house at about 6:55, to daycare and back to make the train. When he was a baby though I got TO the daycare @ 6:30/6:45

I'm SURE when my 2nd maternity leave is over and I"m getting two kids (including a 6 month old) out in the morning I'm going to have to leave at 6:30 !!

Kudos to you - the 7:14! I give myself props if I get on before the 8:47 Chat Icon
Honestly, it was easier for me 6 months ago, actually pre-potty b/c that's it - i can't tell him he can't use the potty and that's the one thing that really holds us up. The other crap stalls us (the requests for 5-minutes to watch a show, or what have you) but it just really takes me be sterning and telling him to get his butt in the car. Colin, nowadays, only throws off the schedule b/c it I pause for one second to help Ryan, or even switch a light off in the house, I turn around and the child has taken off his socks and hat Chat Icon

This is why I give Lucas a snack on the way to daycare...I hold it in my hand while walking out the door and he follows...eyes glazed over and only focused on the prize. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Seriously.

That and DH helps me get them out of the house. I shower and he gets each one up and dressed. Everything, like you, is packed the night before and we just try to get everyone OUT. It's hard and today I had to do it all by myself...if I had to eb at work I would have been beyond late.

So short of the snack I have no ideas. Chat Icon

I wish DH had to do it one morning just so he would get how it feels to actually have to get 2 ready and out in a timely fashion - he hasn't a clue. He is gone before we all wake up - lucky Chat Icon

Unfortunately, juice and snacktrap set up in the playroom 5-minutes after waking up are what give me the time to get ready, and get Colin ready. Then once I dress Colin, he goes in the playpen with a snacktrap of cheerios and puffs - so we def. utilize food in the routine Chat Icon

Would you be willing to let them sleep in their carseats? Or is it too cold for that already?

Yep, I would be if there was a potty next to Ryan's carseat. Better yet a remote controlled hole in his seat - like on a bus Chat Icon

I have to get out of the house with both of my kids fed and watered by 8.30 every morning to walk the half mile to school. AND we only have one bathroom, so I don't get into the shower usually until 7.45, hecks I don't even wake up until 7.45, as long as I got my baby sleeping next to me (and by baby, I mean Immi, not my husband) I am staying in bed. So in that 45 minutes between 7.45 and 8.30 am I shower, get dressed, sort out clothes for the kids, make Noah's breakfast, make his packed lunch for school, try to choke down a cup of coffee while feeding Immi her breakfast. Get Noah dressed, get him to actually get his coat on, get the pushchair out of the car, stuff Immi into her snowsuit, and (phew) get out of the door to go to school...oh, and I have to remember said packed lunch and school bag.

Most of the walk to school is either occupied by Noah complaining about how cold he is, or how he wants to go in the car (I can only park halfway between school & home, so its pointless going in the car) when we finally start to meet up with some other kids in his class, he is finally happy...

Usually we make it to school on time, but my poor baby has to go on the school run in her pajamas!! On thursday I went for a coffee after the school run and only realised that she was in her PJ's once we go to the coffee shop. Oops!!!

These are the best of times!!

Re: Morning routine/leaving the house with 2 kids...

I get up at 5am. Pack up son's food for the day, and shower. Get up my dd up and let her watch a show while I dry my hair. Wake up DS, change him and get him dressed. Put him in bed with DD and a bottle(yes, I know he is almost 2 but hey, it works for nowChat Icon ). Get DD out of the bed, and get her clothes on. Grab DS and DD and head to the bathroom to wrestle with my DD hair, put sunscreen on my invisible children and brush both their teeth(they start, I finish).

Let them finish watching a show while I load up the car with all our stuff. Grab both kids, get them in car seats in the driveway, run back and lock the door.

Out the door by 7am and to Grace's school by 7:05- get both out of car seats and run through her school with DS, fight with him to get him BACK in his care seat and drive to his sitter and drop him off by 7:25. In my office by 7:35.

WHEW- exhuasted me just to write that all down. Thankfully, breakfast is all at day care/ preschool. Chat Icon It's all hard! I think that its really tough to get it done. Hang in thereChat Icon

Obviously I'm not a working mom but I know that trying to get them out in time for school 3 days a week is killer.

Like Ang, I have noticed on days when I really need him to get his butt in gear - I have a treat waiting for him. Flame away, but the promise of one Hershey Kiss when he gets into his carseat is a LIFESAVER for me.

I do the same thing....I hold it in front of him like he's a little puppy. Bad I know. But, it helps Chat Icon Chat Icon

That's why when we know we have to be out of the house at 8am. I start packing the truck and getting everything ready by 7:15-7:30....so by 8 we're usually on the road. Works most mornings, but with 2 under 2, it can be difficult. Thankfully i only have to do this 2 days per week now since i work from home the rest of the week.

My god I have a hard time just getting DD out of the house in the morning and I am no where near as organized as you are! I should take notes from you and prep as much as I can the night before! Now with the twins coming my biggest fear is trying to get them all out of the house in the morning when I go back to work!

Chat Icon This is going to be a challenge but I'm sure you'll get your routine. Your family watches DC? Can they come to you in the beginning until you get used to being back at work? Chat Icon
