Similarity between child-parents and pet-parents

Alright, I know there's going to be a bunch of Chat Icon going on at this but I don't care. My friend at work (who is a parent) is constantly saying how the things I say sound so Mom-like and about how so many things are similar.

I know they're not children. I know parents may read this, scoff, and think 'My kid is more important than her dogs.' I agree. But keep in mind that my dogs are more important to me than your kid, because they're mine. Chat Icon

Disclaimer over. I'll start. Chat Icon

- I setup playdates for my dogs as much as possible. I want them to have friends to play with. And I know which of my dogs will get along best with theirs, and which "parent" is a pain in the *** but I keep getting together for the good of the dogs anyway. Chat Icon

Anyone else?

Re: Similarity between child-parents and pet-parents

A few from me Chat Icon

- My cat has awesome health insurance. Chat Icon Haven't yet convinced DH to get his two kitties covered, but that's his choice. (I consider them all "my cats", but the one that is covered has been with me since 2002, covered since then, and DH thinks it's a waste. Whatever!)

- I can tell if one of their meows/cries is indicitive of pain or discomfort.

- They have their own Christmas stockings. Well, "mine" does. "His" will have ones made this season, since it's our first Christmas living together.

- I give them a little broth-based soup and rice if I notice that they've have an upset tummy.

- My mother and father have given up all hope of us ever having children, so they send gifts in the mail (they live in FL) at Christmas with tags for their "grandson".

- When we go away somewhere, I am extremely picky about who cares for them and I call that person a bunch of times to check up on them. Bonus: the people that understand me so much that they text me photos of the little ones while I'm away. Chat Icon

Re: Similarity between child-parents and pet-parents

-My kitty has his own christmas stocking Chat Icon

-I spoil him rotten...when I want to give him a treat, I open a can of tuna and give him that. No cat treats for MY baby...he gets the real stuff!

-I spend a good amount of money making him look nice and getting him groomed

-I pick the boogies out of the corners of his eyes on a daily basis.

Actually...between SD and the kitty I would say I have 2 kids, not one Chat Icon

1st off, i totally agree Chat Icon

- quinn and ava have their own christmas stocking, with presents
- i pick ava's eye boogies out for her all the time
- when i take them to my parents house, i say "we're going to grandma's house!" - and yes, they know what this means!! as soon as we turn onto my parents street, ava starts whining - she knows exactly where we are
- my parents are the ONLY ones that i trust to watch them if dh & i go on vacation
- my sister, best friend, and parents all buy them christmas presents
- their birthdays get written on the calandar
- my dad sometimes cooks separate food just for them, when they're visiting. like randomly, he will just make & feed them scrambled eggs
- when talking about them to people, i describe their personality traits & have been told that if someone didn't know any better, they would think they are children, not dogs. my response? "they're MY children" Chat Icon
i could go on forever, but right now i have to tell quinn to stop fighting with his sister Chat Icon

I'm sort of child free for now (6 month pregnant) but even when the baby is born, I'll still consider our dog our child as well. I talk to him about his sister all the time!Chat Icon

Re: Similarity between child-parents and pet-parents

I am going to say this with the most sincerity and I dont care what anyone thinks...

I love my dog as much as I love my daughter .. The same child like mohterly love that you give children I give this dog.. I spend time with my dd and my dog . we play together . I teach her how to treat her . She holds the leash when we walk. They are BOTH my babies and always will be.. I was called creepy by another poster on here because of the love I have for this dog .. And I will still say it .. I love this dog like I gave birth to her myself!

If my DD turns out as well behaved and respectful as my dog I will be the luckiest mother alive!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

crashing here (but I think you ladies rock!)

....and I had a puppy once, and let me tell you.......between a puppy versus a baby, I found a puppy to be way more challenging and needy! At least babies can go in a swing and fall asleep...and poop in a diaper ...doggies don't!

sooo much work.

I give you all credit.

This is me with my cat. She once got out the window and trapped on the fire escape - I knew immediately she was in distress. :(

Last night, my DH kept telling Bella, our new cat of 6 hours, to go sit with "mommy".

Wasn't expecting that from him.

Re: Similarity between child-parents and pet-parents

My BFF has a puppy that has been sick for the past week. Since I don't have pets nor know how to treat them or what's "appropriate", I call her everyday to see how her Pup is doing. I treat her puppy the same way I would ask for a sick baby Chat Icon
She did tell me she appreciates it lol Chat Icon

-I can definitely tell by their barks/whimpers/growls if something is wrong or if they are just being dogs.

-My dogs have Christmas stockings, also, in the shape of paw prints.

-I take them to McDonald's on their birthdays and get them plain hamburgers. Chat Icon

ETA: I always call myself their mommy and DH their daddy. DH does the same. Chat Icon

Re: Similarity between child-parents and pet-parents

I know his every meaow.. I can tell what he wants by his meaow.

He loves chicken, bacon and smoked gouda cheese. We don't eat bacon often, but he gets shredded chicken as little snack/treat every other day and cheese when we do it (those things are Chat Icon) Oh and its cooked separately

I don't trust anyone to watch him, except my parents.

When we enter our apt, I turn on the light very slowly to make sure he does not have squint

I have gone home from my IL's before stopping at work in the middle of a rain storm to put a fresh bowl of water out for him..

So many, many more... I could keep going..

eta: we celebrate his birthday.. every single year.. cake, party et all..

Re: Similarity between child-parents and pet-parents

our cats are treated as children with the exception we leave them home alone together when going out and we do talk about them (thinking of what they are doing) if we go out for a long time. SO yea my cats are our kids and are very important to us.

We celebrate birthdays too, have stockings for them. Chat Icon

I know their food likes and dislikes, and what things will give them upset stomachs. I don't like when people want to give them scraps of their food because it's like giving a child junk food.

I train them and use positive reinforcement. When they take to a new command, or remember an old one, I'm proud of them. When we're taking them somewhere for a day, I have to pack a bag with all their stuff... bags, bowls, water, towel, whistle (for training), treats, maybe a ball or a toy. I have considered buying a diaper bag for this purpose. Chat Icon

Re: Similarity between child-parents and pet-parents

I definitely treat my dog like my child and since we don't plan on any kids, it works perfect

*for his 1st birthday that just passed I gave him a special dinner rather than his normal dog food and then he got an ice cream treat

*My mom calls him her grandson

*He will have his own stocking this year at our house and my moms house

*He will have a your 1st x-mas ornament this year

*he has great health insurance

*every Saturday I pack a bag for him and bring him to my moms so he can run around her backyard (bigger than mine) for the day

Re: Similarity between child-parents and pet-parents

I completely agree w/all of you ladies. I will hopefully be a Mommy to a human baby one day soon but I already consider myself a Mommy to a doggie. DH & I love her, cuddle her, make sure she is warm, fed, have rushed her to the vet when she has thrown up continuously in the middle of the night. I know when she looks at me w/the those big beautiful eyes that she loves us. I honestly cant understand how someone can not consider a dog, cat, etc part of the their family! Heck, I even got one of those Channa plaques and added her name to it. Chat Icon

I am with you on all of this. Only your dog is more well behaved than mine. However I love the fact that my dog is a little bratty imp. It's an unconditional love, same as with my child. .Chat Icon

My dog is my child Chat Icon

I love taking him out in the car. When he goes to the kennel when we travel, I call it camp (it pretty much is with all the play time he gets!). He gets "cookies" not milkbones. I heat up his wet food before I mix it with the dry. He has an album on my FB with more than 100 pics.

I TOTALLY AGREE. My 4-legged kids are just as important to me as someones' 2-legged children are to them.

My dogs have great health insurance, they have all been to school, I would take them everywhere if I could. My 80 lb German Shepherds (x2) and my 70 lb Rottweiler are more well behaved than alot of kids I know. There is a kid that lives across the street from me, he is an Agent of Sat*n, the kid is downright evil. He is not welcome to play at my other neighbors house with their same-age children, but my dogs are allowed over.
