How do you deal w/career and professional setbacks?

I took a job w/a GREAT company but I have been stuck in this dept. w/NO advancement whatsoever. Every time I try to move up w/in the company, I get shot down. It is taking a toll on me professionally, emotionally and personally. I keep "plugging along" as one dept. head told me but I am reaching my absolute breaking point.

And to make matters worse, people around me IN my department are moving up because of family connections (mom's boyfriend, gilfriend's dad) and they are younger than me and without 1/10 of the skill/education/experience I have.

I am feeling SO defeated right now.

i hate to say it but even if its a so called great company, you seem to be stunted with no chances for advancement. As crappy as it sounds, I'd look elsewhere. You can work in a great company and have a bad job and you can work in a bad company and have a great job (like me lol)

I have a BA in History/Art History and PD certidication Nutrition/Neutraceutical Research...I have a feeling in order to do what I want I'm going to need to go back to school.

Ideally, I want to get paid to research and write. I sort of do that now, but in a very limited scope.
