CF and gift giving...

A post on FHF got me thinking. The OP said someone wanted to make up the difference since they had 2 kids and OP had 1.

Should I get a better gift from my SIL since I bought for her 2 kids? Obviously I am not serious, but it seems some people really get snippy over the "cost" and "dollar amount" being spent. When you buy for people w/kids, do you feel slighted in their gifts to you? Should your CF status be taken into consideration?

To me, I don't think it matters what is being spent, it's the quality and thought of the gift. I don't expect my SIL to buy me something $$$ since I had to buy for her kids, and honestly, I doubt this would ever enter a lot of peoples minds.

Re: CF and gift giving...

I responded to that thread. A few years ago my siblings and I (as well as DH's) decided not to exchange for the adults, it's just silly at this point, what do we all need?

My sister and my SIL both said it wasn't "fair" since I was buying for 2 kids for my sister and 3 for my SIL...I told that that was silly, I didn't feel that way but both of them were very adamant about doing something for DH and I. I told them either:

1. Have the kids make me something - this was so much fun! My SIL gets very creative with this and I think it's great.
2. Give me pictures of the kids in a nice frame
3. If you feel so strongly - buy toys for my dogs.

This.

I keep everything the kids make for me. My Godson Jack made me the coolest card as a thank-you for his birthday present and it's been hanging on my fridge ever since.

It's sporadic but my sister does remember this every once in a while and will get me a gift. I don't ask and I don't expect anything. The situation is definitely one-sided but the kids are the ones that count. My sister is always hosting the holiday anyway, so you could say that that's my present right there. Chat Icon

ITA.

I feel that yet again the holiday season has turned into a tit for tat. Well their gift was only $20 so I can only get them something that was $20. My brother has two boys I get them any and everything they want. Do I expect my brother to do the math and get DH and I something to equal the price- of course not. That is just absurd. What happened to just giving someone a gift because you want to??!
Last year when my nephew was in Kindergarten for mothers day he made his mom a card and then told his teacher he wanted to make one for his Titi.Chat Icon That card made by a 5 year old was more then any monetary gift his parents could have bought for me to even out the money that I spend.

I can't wait for the day I get handmade gifts from my niece and nephew. As it is, I consider smiles, hugs and laughs the best gift.

Re: CF and gift giving...

DH and I spend on our niece and nephew and don't expect anything in return.
DH and I and my sis and her DH exchange token gifts for the holidays.
We ask each other what we would like/need, whether personal or "for the house".

I have a few homemade items from the kids that I treasure - the turkey my nephew made 5 years ago and the picture my niece drew 3 years ago of me as the bride and she as the flower girl have a prime spot in my wall unit.

Re: CF and gift giving...

You can have no money either as a CF or with kids. I spend what I can afford and if it's only $20 per kid so be it.
