Where's my Age 5( and up) moms/dads of little boys ?? ....

Please tell me I am not alone here....

We are having a really rough time with my 5yo DS these days...

It's not a freshness thing....It's more of a non-stop constant silliness , completely tuning us out when we ask him to stop something or do something until the point that we have to yell like drill sargeants type thing...I hate it

His teacher tells me his behavior is great in school ( which trust me, I'd rather have him make me crazy at home than her at school) , but its really starting to wear me down over here
He does get upset when he gets time-outs or punished, so I know that he does have remorse, but then goes right back to the behavior that he was just reprimanded for...It can be silly things, like running in the house and making my 2yo chase him ( which is dangerous for her), potty talk (butts, farts etc...) , playing with his cars on our wood floors (this has been instilled in him since birth that its a no-no..) taking 20 minutes to put shoes on etc....All relatively silly things but its constant constant constant !!! I am tired of hearing my own voice....

Every day I wake up saying "ok , today will be better" and within minutes its all over....My occupation by nature is daycare so I am pretty numb to a heck of a lot, but this kid is gonna be the death of me here...He's even getting on my DH's nerves who has the longest wick of any man I know...


I have seen him around classmates, and he seems pretty tame compared to a lot of the other boys his age, but its getting to be too much...And like the old saying " I don;t care what the other boys are doing" ...LOL..I try very hard to keep my expectations of him reasonable ...


Tell me this is some kind of phase and my boy will be back to wanting to please soon ?????

My son is 6 and exactly the same. He's not doing bad things, just not paying attention to the world around him! He does great in school....an angel.

At home, I must tell him one hundred times to get his coat on, it takes 20 minutes for him to brush his teeth, he doesn't listen when I tell hiim to stop banging a toy on my kitchen table.

I think this is a case of my son transitioning into a school aged boy! Farts are funny, armpit farts even funnier. Saying "private parts" is the funniest thing on earth. Running and sliding on his knees to see how far he gets in the middle of my kitchen is a daily activity...and the list goes on and on...

DS is 7, and very similar.... along with the other boys in my Cub Scout Den.... and some of the boys his age in karate, and sometimes in soccer...... so, from my experience, if 75% of all boys that age that I am around do the exact same thing, I consider it "normal"... although very frustrating....

I know you said boys, but my SD was the same way at 5 and through 6...took forever to do anything, had to tell her things tons of times...I wish I could say its totally improved, but the only part that is better is that she can get around and get out the door in a timely manner.

The listening thing is still a pretty big issue

ETA: She just turned 8 on Saturday and its actually been a death spiral for behavior since then...

At least I find comfort in knowing that its in the realm of "norm" ...

I really just wish it wasn't from the second he wakes up ( which most days is before 6am
) until he goes to sleep...Having a 2 year old and being 6 months pregnant is helping matters I'm sure...

I just KNOW how fast these years ago and really wish I could spend more time enjoying him at this age instead of correcting and reprimanding...Thats the part I think that makes me sad

I have one who is 5.5 and another who is 7 and that is them EXACTLY. I am waiting for the phase to pass.

Im not sure if you had seen any my posts; but Ive been having issues with my 5yr old as well...

For us; there is alot going on- so Im sure our issues are heightened... but it seems that 5; is just a touch age

I started reading 1,2,3 Magic; and immediately started counting the stop behaviors; and I feel its really helping me..

Its helping me not to lose my cool; and although he always pushes me to count to 2- we havent made it to 3; since the 3rd day I started implementing this at home...

I havent finished the book; so I havent gotten into the "start" behaviors yet... (when you want your child to START doing something; ex: eat dinner, take a shower, do homework, etc...)

But so far; I have found it to be a very helpful source!

I started reading 1,2,3 Magic; and immediately started counting the stop behaviors; and I feel its really helping me..

Its helping me not to lose my cool; and although he always pushes me to count to 2- we havent made it to 3; since the 3rd day I started implementing this at home...

We have the same issue here - my DS is five and every day is a challenge. On the bus, he learned the word "booty" and that is his new favorite word - drives me nuts. He doesn't listen, is very defiant and gets angry when I correct him or discipline him. Since so many parents have the same issues with their DC, I'm assuming it's a phase. I hope it doesn't last too long...

Age 5 - - has been one long "phase"...almost 6 years and it has been a tough year for me with my son - totally testing limits. Once kindergarten started I saw a big change and things were looking up (he had a lot on anxiety about starting school and the sumemr was rough) but the craziness/moody/anger/defiance is all coming back lately. Some days I wonder where I went wrong but glad to see I am not alone. From what I hear it is all at home - I believe he is quiet and extreme rule follower at school...so I guess that is some good news.

Wow glad to see I'm not alone. DS is really trying our patience (especially me). His behavior is perfect at school, but at home he definitely pushes the limits.

Definitely going to look into the book.

I hate to say it but give it a few more years and you'll get the fresh mouth, defiant attitude & "I want freedom but I can't handle it" attitude. My 8 year old challenges ever single thing I say. Some days it is LITERALLY every single thing. I want to pull my hair out sometimes. But on the flipside he still wants to cuddle with me and I want to cry bc I know he won't want to soon.

1-2-3 Magic is excellent BTW. Anyone looking into it - you should also see if you library has the DVD or can get it for you. It's an easy read but the DVD is even better. But if you do it - really do it, not just half way - and you will see results. It's designed to eliminate that day to day arguing, pleading, yelling and such.
