advice needed regarding housebreaking
well sortof yeah. Fred has a crate. I do not crate him all day, only when I have to shower or I have to leave. I try not to give him free run of the house but he was able to climb the stairs the day we brought him home and wants to be in the action. He goes outside 99% of the time. He has slept in his crate through the night since day one and never has a accident. Ok problem is..he is not vocal when he has to go out, so if he has to go and I do not see him circling he will pee on the floor. I immed take him out if I catch him-tell him to get busy and he finishes. So question is..what did u do? use a bell? what cn I do that he can let me know when he has to go out?

Re: advice needed regarding housebreaking
how old is he?
For mine, I didnt wait for him to "tell" me, i took him out immediately after waking up, after eating & after playing. That ended up being at least 6 times a day (we live in an apartment). Now that he's older, its twice a day.
If he's outside most of the time, when he is inside let him out every hour or two for a quick pee. that way you never give him that opportunity to feel desperate enough to start circling on your floor.
sounds like he's doing well so far!

I completely agree! My dog used to violently throw herself against the door-HARD! I felt so bad! After a while I stopped taking her out and waited until she was sitting by the door instead before I took her. Now she just walks to the door and politely sits lol
They have a tendency to learn the behaviors you show them, so if you take him out before he has to go, he'll get used to going at those specific times. They also need to go out a bit less as they get older. Sounds like you're doing great!

Re: advice needed regarding housebreaking
thats the thing, I take him out immed upon waking, 1/2 after feeding and so on. I can give him a forty minute walk he comes in like yesterday, and pee on the floor? yesterday he did it in front of my husband, I dk. maybe its medical. I am thinking I have too keep him leashed for a day or two next toi me and walk him every 20 minutes. What do u think? not convienent with the holidays

Re: advice needed regarding housebreaking
I would try the bell - my dog does not like to bark either and that worked he would hit with his nose or his back when he sat next to the door
I would take him out more often and if you can not watch him by the door - i would put him back in the crate
also don't forget to take him into every room even if he is on a leash - a room that they don't go in they think is not part of the house and will have accidents in - i would specifically do things in our guest bedroom for him to get used to that room because we did not go in there often

Re: advice needed regarding housebreaking
we keep a pad by the door too .. shees starting to learn that if we cant take her right away to go on the pas so at least shes not peeing anywhere she wants .. Now we know when she goes to the pad that we could just run her outside really quick!

Same here. When she was younger, probably until she was 8-9 months, I took her out at least 6 times a day. We lived in an apartment too and I just took her out obsessively. I do keep a bell on the door and would hit it when we went out. I didn't think she really connected the sounds.
She's a year now and she's pretty vocal if I'm ignoring her and she has to go out. She'll get mouthy and gently nudge my hand and lick me. If I still ignore her, usually I'm cooking, She'll go to the door and hit the bell and whine. I think this started in the last 2 months and she's a little over a year. It took her awhile to get the hang of telling us.
She's a big people pleaser and does not have accidents in the house, but I think that it likely because we took her out a ton when she was younger and more prone to accidents. I think you are doing really well if you only have a few accidents here and there.
ETA: I just saw your update. Do you reprimand him if you see him pee in front of you? When we had started house training and she peed in front of me I'd firmly say bad girl and take her outside after. When she peed outside I went crazy. She got treats and hugs and got pet. She knew she was doing the right thing. I would try taking him out more frequently and making sure he pees when he goes out. IF he doesn't pee when you are outside then I'd crate him and take him out again in 40 minutes until he goes.
