holiday gifts for kids spinoff
crashing from parenting - So many people are asking me what to get DS.
I feel weird telling them an exact item because then it seems like I expect them to spend that $ amount, you know?
What do you guys think of amazon wish lists?

Re: holiday gifts for kids spinoff
For a little kid I think its great. My mom used to ask us for a list & then mention a few things to my aunts & they'd pick which they'd get, and she'd take that off the table for the next aunt.
This is the same concept, but more self-service. Of course, only mention it to people who ask & then its not greedy.

This would probably annoy me too. But thats just me. I like to put thought into my gifts and hate when SIL tells us what to get the niece and nephew. Unless we ask that is .

Re: holiday gifts for kids spinoff
I ask my sister all the time, and I'll be honest that the little dance of "Oh whatever you get is fine" for 10 minutes until she finally tells me is getting annoying. But I tell her that too, we have a really open relationship.
According to my nephews, I am the best gift-giver ever. This is not a responsibility I take lightly. It is in large part due to my sister giving me ideas, fads, things they're interested in. Sometimes I take it and run with it myself, sometimes I get a specific thing on their list.
For the last birthday, my nephew wanted this Razor glider thing that was over $100. I usually spend $75 on each child to be fair, so my sister offered to make up the difference.
My opinion... if someone is asking, they want to know, and you should just tell them. If you don't know the price range, I'd offer more than one suggestion or just a general "He's really into dinosaurs right now" idea.
DH and I keep Amazon wish lists for ourselves and my parents asked for the link years back. I gave it to them and they were thankful for the range of items on it.
It all depends on the people involved I guess!

By the way, if you happen to mention you keep the wish list to keep things sorted for yourself for Christmas or birthdays, that could open up the conversation.

Re: holiday gifts for kids spinoff
To each their own -- but I hate them. I know it's for convenience or what not, but it just feels like these days there is no surprise or anything. Whatever happened to just going out and trying to find a good gift for people without having to print a list out and having to stick to a specific list?
The only time "lists" are okay to me, to give to others, are for a bridal or baby shower. That's it. But I think I'm just a little old fashioned.
No offense at all to anyone who does them, but I absolutely refuse to even look at a wish list. I'd rather just go to the store and find something that I think my nieces and nephews will love...and they always are excited for the gifts from DH and I, since they know we are usually pretty in tune with things they like.
But that's just me, I know everyone is different.
ETA: To the OP - I think you probably know your family best and whether they would want the wish list or not...I know in my family it would be a big no-no.

Re: holiday gifts for kids spinoff
I'll ask a parent if there's anything their kid would like, what they are interested in, their clothing size, etc but I don't love the idea of getting an amazon link. Part of the fun of gift giving is finding the perfect gift. If am basically going to be sent on an errand, I may as well just give cash or a gift card.

Re: holiday gifts for kids spinoff
Im SOOO thankful when the fam in our life gives us specific items on a list to buy... it makes shopping so much easier... DH & I find it soo stressful to sit there and think about what a child may or may not want... And then honestly, I feel bad when its something that the clid never plays/looks at ever again after the first day... Parents should know best what their children want or are into so I LOVE lists...
PS: If i want to get a little surprise gift that I think they'd like, I'll get something small to go with the main wish listed gift

Re: holiday gifts for kids spinoff
I am definitely in the minority here and I mean no offense by this AT ALL <Now that the disclaimer has been said > I don't like the idea of making a wish list. When I ask parents what they recommend for their child I expect one of two answers: toys or clothing. From there I decide what I want to get the child. I just think that making a list puts added pressure on the person to find "exactly" what the parent suggested.
Again, it might just be me. If it's for immediate family then I guess it's ok.

Re: holiday gifts for kids spinoff
My initial feeling was not good about the online wish list, but I guess an Amazon wish list is the updated version of some of us "older" folks making a written wish list from the Sears Wish Book for our parents, who would relay the information to our relatives.

Re: holiday gifts for kids spinoff
I love the wish list, 6 great nieces and nephews all under 5, it lets me know what they are into and I go from there. There is always a variety of prices and I just buy what is in mine. They actually do it on Toys R US and they had free shipping, so all was sent right to them. I live OOS.

Re: holiday gifts for kids spinoff
i think if someone is asking what your kids want is because they want specifc so the wish list is great but if someone ask you what is he/she into than you can just say barbies/car/ arts and craft kits etc

Re: holiday gifts for kids spinoff
my sister used to make out lists and cut pictures out of magazines, etc and put it next to what she wrote...
its no different than a kid writing up a list themselves...

ITA. I don't mind when my SIL sends me a list of things and I choose one of those. I also come up with a small surprise gift that my nephew usually gets a kick out of.
