WWYD- 8 year old kissing his sister
My friend's 8 year old son kissed his 5 year old sister on the mouth. She and her husband flipped out, yelled at him and told him his behavior is highly inappropriate.
She asked me my opinion on the situation. I told her I haven't been there b/c I only have one boy, but I think that 8 years old is very young still and IMO it is innocent. I suggested they try to find out what prompted him to give her a kiss, was it merely out of brotherly affection? Has he seen anyone in his class kiss someone of the opposite sex and did it out of curiosity? Perhaps he has seen family members give each other a peck on the lips, etc? Or maybe (I hope not), someone has acted in an inappropriate manner with him and he is acting it out? At any rate, I wouldn't punish him or make him feel like he did something awful.
Anyone deal with a similar situation? If so, how did you handle it? Thanks.

Re: WWYD- 8 year old kissing his sister
The more I am on here the more I am 10000% convinced that we are total freaks in the eyes of 'normal polite' society. It is not uncommon for either of my kids to grab my face and give me a smack on the lips. When I leave in the morning or tuck them in at night I give them a buss on the mouth. I honestly never have seen anything wrong with it and kind of assume that as they get older it will wane.. just like it did with my parents and myself. Given that, if Robbie kissed his brother on the lips I honestly wouldn't be concerned at all and they've done it before - a quick peck to show affection is just not a big deal to me.Now.. if I caught them MAKING OUT I would have some concerns.. but clearly that's totally different.
Chances are he was trying to be affectionate with his sister in a way that he has seen on television or in person. Do the parents kiss each other? Do they kiss their children on the mouths? If so.. it's probably just a matter of emulating what he's seeing. Maybe he's seen friends or family behaving in this manner.
If his parents have a challenge with the behavior they should sit BOTH kids down and explain that in 'this family' we show affection by kissing on the cheek or giving a great, big hug and that kissing on the mouth is something that is left for the parents.

Re: WWYD- 8 year old kissing his sister
It hasn't happened to me (my oldest is only 4 1/2), but I absolutely wouldn't punish the child over it. I doubt there was anything sinister behind it -- he was probably just imitating other people he's seen kiss on the mouth, like his parents. I would just have a discussion with him and explain that it's not appropriate-- brothers and sisters kiss on the cheek, kissing on the mouth is for grownups (or something like that)

Re: WWYD- 8 year old kissing his sister
I kiss my kids on the lips. I never thought I would but my DS started it and I have come to find I love it it's so sweet. He's only two, and DD is 9 months, but really if I do it, it would make sense for him to pick up on it and do it to his little sis. There's nothing wrong with it - it's a sweet sign of affection in our house, it's not like we give each other tongue Not to make light of the situation but I think you know what I mean

Kissing each other...no. I never have to worry about that one. Hitting each other yes...
I'm not a lip kisser with my kids. We say that everyone has a special kiss. Mommy & daddy have a special way of kissing (lips) & they each have a special way of kissing us ranging from ear wiggles to butterfly kisses.

Re: WWYD- 8 year old kissing his sister
We are lip kissers in this house. I kiss my kids on the lips, as does DH and my girls kiss eachother on the lips. However, if your friend is flipping out, I assume this is not the standard in their home. I think it depends on the type of kiss and being that none of us saw it, I do not think any of us can say if it was inappropriate or not. KWIM?

I don't think it is a big deal and I am not a lip kisser with the kids. I think making a big deal out of it is the worst thing she can do. I tell m kids we don't kiss on the lips because of passing germs, but they know my dh and I do.

Re: WWYD- 8 year old kissing his sister
I opened this expecting to read about a brother tongue kissing his sister. I absolutely, without a doubt, think they are overreacting. Everyone in my family and most of my friends are lip kissers with their kids/family.
I have only heard how "disgusting" it is from this forum.
