Aggressive cat

Out of my 4 cats, Gizmo, (I guess he's a gray tab) is very vicious sometimes. I was supposed to take him and his 'brother' Oscar, another gray tab, to get fixed this morning.

Giz would not cooperate. I got scratched pretty badly, and he hissed and growled like I was trying to kill him when placing him in the carrier. I normally throw treats in and all the other cats swarm in, but it's like Giz knows what that's carriers for.

I like to bring my cats out sometimes, particularly to my IL's because my FIL LOVES to play with the cats since there still technically in Kitten stage, and my purpose was that they don't get used to the fact that the carrier means they are going to the vet. Gizmo is a lot smarter than I give him credit for.

How can I contain my cat without getting hurt? Isn't there a certain way to grip the cat? I'm so afraid of hurting them.

Re: Aggressive cat

is the carrier big enough for him? I use his pet house, (its much larger) to carry him around. I also put in some of his toys in there.

You can grip him by his scruff and support his bottom (if he's big) and that shouldn't hurt him.

Re: Aggressive cat

the carrier is definitely big. i have 2, i usually only take 2 at a time to the vet and i told 2 carriers are better for weight support when I carry them.

Re: Aggressive cat

We have had problems like that with a couple of our cats. It took hours upon hours to move all of them when we moved from my parents' house to our home. However, one thing that you could try is to put a towel over your cat's head. Then pick him up and put him in the carrier. This might not work, but it has helped us because the cat does not see that he or she is headed into the crate.

Re: Aggressive cat

we have this problem with one of our cats... grab him by the scruff/back of the neck and hold his bottom and then put him in the crate backwards so he can't see what you're doing

Re: Aggressive cat

Wrap him in a towel or blanket first -- before he can even see the carrier. It will prevent him from being able to scratch you.

It's also (usually) easier to put them in from the top, instead of pushing them into the carrier. I would suggest a carrier with a top opening. If that's not possible, put the carrier on its end so you can put the cat down into it.

The towel will prevent the cat from being able to scratch you and obviously, you pull it up and off once the cat is in the carrier -- quickly while you shut the door. Give him treats once he's in and the door is shut... but one of mine will NOT eat a treat in the carrier. *sigh*

I did exactly this - it worked.
