If you work as a therapist doing EI and CPSE...I have some questions?

What made you decide to work as a therapist through EI/CPSE instead of a school classroom?

Are you able to make your own hours/days? Do you get to choose if you see students in the home, school or agencies office?

Can you work p/t around your schedule?

What is the payscale? Are you salaried, paid hourly or by case? Is the pay comparable to school teachers?

If you prefer to, you can FM me. TIA!!!!

i;m a spec ed teacher but was hired by an agency although i didn't take the job a few years ago so i'll try to anwser.

What made you decide to work as a therapist through EI/CPSE instead of a school classroom? many of my friends left schools to work for an agency (as will i wheni start working again) bc you have much greater flexability in your schedule. u make your own hours mainly.

Are you able to make your own hours/days? Do you get to choose if you see students in the home, school or agencies office? u pick the hours and days but u have to find cases that fit and that isn't always easy. also kids schedules change and you may need to accomidate them or you will loose the case. u can be choosy with the cases you get (in daycares, what neighborhoods, etc.) but you also want to get the right amount of cases so you make money.

Can you work p/t around your schedule?
yup

What is the payscale? Are you salaried, paid hourly or by case? Is the pay comparable to school teachers? i was offered anhourly rate. not sure how it compares to my teaching sakery though. you'd have to see how many hours you work and also take into consideration that you pay your own health insurance in most agencies. i'm not sure about 401k's or retirement plans but i'm positive that it is better in a school.

many of my friends did the switch to agency work after many years of working in a school bc they were burned out with working in a classroom and liked the ability to work in different places.

I like the flexibility.

I won't need health insurance. We are offered that through DH's job so I'm not concerned there.

I actually do work in a classroom full time and then do work after school. I used to do EI/CPSE full time and honestly, I hated that there really was no connection with other people.

I do make my own hours and I personally see students in the home (because I only work after school hours are done). However, like PP mentioned, it depends on you. I used to take cases in the projects in Brooklyn when no one else wanted to take those cases. For example, I have a lot of friends that work in Queens. . . Everyone wants Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, Fresh meadows area rather than some others. The more willing to take a variety of cases you are, the more you will get cases.

Obviously I do work p/t. . . But not every case likes me coming in the evening time. For EI - mornings are a hot time. A lot of EI therapist have little cases in the 12-2 range b/c thats when a lot of kids have naps. For CPSE cases, a hot time is 3-5 b/c kids go to school and then get some services after.

I am paid hourly by the case. It goes by a flat fee for 1/2 hour or hour cases (or 45 and 90 mins on LI) However, I have been salaried in the past. I make A LOT more as a teacher in a public school on LI than I did working full time for an agency. However, at the time I worked full time with an agency, it was somewhat comparable to the city rates. If you want any more info, feel free to FM me!

It was easier to find a job through an agency and I wanted a job asap. I do make my own hours and can work whatever days I want. I get paid by the case. It's a set fee per 30 min. I'm an SLP. I see kids at schools/pre-k/ and homes. I worked for a different agency where I did see some in office cases. I just depends where you work. Although there are no benefits I do like that you have a lot of freedom.

Re: If you work as a therapist doing EI and CPSE...I have some questions?

Not personally but from conversations with our EI/CPSE therapists. I will be talking about "home services" not school.

EI pays more than CPSE

Therapists usualy like working for an agency because of the flexibility it brings them. Most of them have kids.

They usually like mornings. In EI you can work weekends (if you want to), you can't in CPSE. Sessions are shorter in CPSE. Sessions are longer in EI if at home but shorter if provided at the agency. EI therapists do have to participate to team meetings every month for each case they work. So you may have multiple meetings. I don't remember if you get paid for them. I don't think so. In CPSE, there is only 2 meetings per year. Unless you are a school therapist, home service therapists do not do meetings.

I was told by one of my therapists that going into schools was getting very competitive and now some schools are looking for 2 masters degree vs. only 1.
A lot of them did set up an LLC. They are not employees.

But working through an agency does not guarantee cases. It involves a lot of networking and a$$ kissing of the girl who does the scheduling in the agency.

Most therapists sign up with multiple agencies.

Re: If you work as a therapist doing EI and CPSE...I have some questions?

I have another question for those doing EI ? Do team leaders tend to make more money (TIER 2) ?

I am just trying to figure out the incentive in being a team leader. It seems as if great team leaders are hard to find especially where I live.

(not to hijack) But if anyone knows any team leaders that work south nassau and have early mornings available,...I would greatly appreciate it :)Chat Icon

They do make more $$$ but it's not a lot. I was told like $5 or $10 more per session. And they get that "extra' session for family training.

I think it's a step up for them to go into supervisory role later on.

Exactly....

I went that route 10 yrs ago because I had trouble finding a teaching job, and there was such a need for ABA professionals, it worked better for me. I also liked the flexibility.

The downside is that sometimes it isn't seen as a"real" job by other people, although I'm not sure why.... also, I had no health insurance, and there is no 401k, anything like that. You also don't get reimbursed for mileage and you travel a LOT. You don't get paid for any days off - if the kid is all of a sudden sick for a month, there goes your money.

Being in people's homes can be difficult. Some parents have work spaces available, which is great - although being in basements most of your day can be downright depressing. The flip side - there is no work space available and you are trying to work with them in their living room or kitchen, where they were never asked to do work before and you are dealing with tantrums in front of mom, dad, grandma etc - while they are arguing with you or undermining you....

Don't get me wrong - I loved it for a long time, but you get burnt out, and most agencies don't have the best supervisors to help you....

I eventually opted to take a position as a higher up in an agency to make things better for therapists (and the kids and families) for some of the reasons above...
