Ovulation/Clomid opinions needed

I have been TTC for 4 months now. Last month I was given Provera because I didn't ovulate. I never had a problem with my periods before that. Again this month I have not ovulated. Now they want me to start Clomid (which they also suggested for last month but I wanted to try on my own). I was reading that Clomid could dry up your cervical fluid and my husband didn't really like the idea of medication so early on but I'm starting to think maybe I should. I love my doctor and think I should follow her orders. What do you think?

Re: Ovulation/Clomid opinions needed

how long have you been off the pill?
i ovulated on and off for 7 months- but nothing with any regularity- my doctor then put me on clomid b/c it is very difficult to get pregnant if you are not regular (and impossible of course if you don't ovulate).
I had no problem w. the drug drying up my CM- if anything- it had the opposite affect on me- (I actually got CM whereas in the past I had little to none).
I know if I wasn't on Clomid I wouldn't have gotten pregnant- of course, everyone is different. Maybe you should do some prelim blood tests first? My doc did a bunch b/f I started on the clomid.

Re: Ovulation/Clomid opinions needed

Thank you so much. I have had bloodwork done once a month for the past two months. I have been off the pill for 10 months now. I know stress plays a factor sometimes and I had a virus last month also but I think Clomid is worth a shot now. Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me your positive story. I guess I just thought it would be so much easier than it really is to get pregnant.

Re: Ovulation/Clomid opinions needed

I am in a similar situation... right now I am taking provera for the second month. The first time I had such a light period, then went on clomid... but no mature follicles. So, we are trying a new cycle. When I am done with the provera and the right day rolls around, I will get another round of clomid (at higher dose, I think). I am also overwhelmed with all of this... I guess the only advice I can give is make sure you feel really comfortable with your doctor and read as much as you can...

Re: Ovulation/Clomid opinions needed

Clomid is the type of med that the more you use it the more effect is has on the body...sometimes in a positive way and sometimes in a negative. It's important 'not' to be on clomid for long. Thinning of the lining can really become an issue when on clomid ...which will defeat the purpose, as well as the drying up of cervical mucus. You also have to be monitored very carefully because clomid is responsible for causing cysts. On cd3 it's important to get a baseline u/s to make sure no cysts exist...I believe 6 cycles is the max amount to be on this med. However, some doctors don't follow this and they just allow women to be on it longer...Chat Icon

It's important to know your fsh level when using clomid because if your fsh is elevated....clomid is not ideal.

Clomid stays in the body for about 8 weeks. Therefore, if you use it one cycle, and then use it the next, you have a lot higher amount running through you. Many women who have annovulatory cycles, end up ovulating the month they stopped clomid...and conceived.

I think the most important factor that needs to be addressed is the 'cause' of annovulation. Thorough blood work can reveal the cause and with that, ovulation can often occur. For instance, some women are insulin resistant. Once they take metformin, they ovulate, and conceive, ...(metformin helps improve the egg quality as well) and have healthy pregnancies. If a person has a thyroid issue, and is not ovulating...than clomid again is not addressing the issue. (elevated testosterone, dhea, insulin resistance, elevated prolactin, , abnormal 17-oh progesterone etc...are all issues that can play a role on ovulation, successful fertilization and pregnancy )

Clomid works directly with the pituitary gland. If the pituitary gland is dysfunctional, clomid may not be a med that will be effective.

Clomid definitely has been the saving grace for many women for many years...but it also hasn't been. Therefore, make sure you are thoroughly diagnosed. It's the oldest fertility med around and the most over prescribed.

Thanks Deb. A friend of mine mentioned that clomid dried up her CM last night so I was interested in finding out how women on here who took it handled it.

Thanks for asking the question Michele and lots of luck!

Re: Ovulation/Clomid opinions needed

I was on lcomid for 3 cycles. It never dried up my CM and I have an issue with no EWCM to begin with so it was a big concern of mine and it never happened. With all the clomid side effects, its kinda hit or miss, you cant tell if you will or wont get the cretain effect someone else did.
