Total Eclipse
So there will be a total eclipse of the moon tonight.. which is a pretty cool and special event. My 7 year old wants to be an astronaut or astronomer and my 9 year old is very keen on watching the skies as well.
Challenge is.. it's going to happen after midnight in our time zone.
So the question is.. do I wake my kids up to watch it? Should we have an eclipse party? Or do I not?
They have school tomorrow..

Re: Total Eclipse
I'm planning on setting the alarm clock for the beginning of the total eclipse (around 2:30 or so), and waking DS up.

I can't stay up for the entire 6 hour procession, either, but I'd love to see the total eclipse with my own eyes. We'll go on-line afterwards and look at video clips that other people have created.

I'm waking my kids up.
I was up every night for every meteor shower that didn't pan out because of clouds & rain. They may as well see something this year.

Re: Total Eclipse
I remember, so distinctly, when I was 11 and Hailey's comet came to town. My father schlepped all of us to the beach, with a telescope and we watched.
I'm sure it was late, and I'm sure I was exhausted the next day, but it made such an indelible mark on my memory. I want to do the same for my kids, even if it causes me some cranky-grief the next day, so yup, I'm going to wake up Alex.

Yes, I plan on sending DS to school. DD is 4, so I'm not going to get her up. She'll definitely be unbearable all day if she gets that little sleep...
If he winds up being tired during the day tomorrow, he can go to bed early tomorrow night. He should be able to handle one day of being tired.

Re: Total Eclipse
I am not waking anyone up because:
a. We live on the second floor of the apartment building and wouldn't see anything our of our windows anyway.
b. Chances are, he would refuse to wake up anyway

Definitely. If you're going to play, you have to pay. It's their holiday party so all in all a pretty easy day.

Re: Total Eclipse
we're going to try to wake DS up around 2:15 ,so he can see the full eclipse happen.
I'm anticipating that he won't wake up, but DH and I will enjoy it nonetheless.

Re: Total Eclipse
Did anyone see it? We got up but it was sooo cloudy we didn't see a thing! Noah actually refused to get out of bed anyway. Robbie got up and was super disappointed.

Re: Total Eclipse
Couldn't see it.... Too much cloud cover and I think it was too low in the horizon. DS and I even drove around trying to find an area where we could see the horizon, but no luck.
We're going to try again on June 15th...

Re: Total Eclipse
OMG... it was beauuuuuuuuutiful. Just stunning. There wasn't a cloud to be seen in our area - I woke up at 3am, tried to wake up Alex but couldn't, so I stepped outside by myself and it was one of the most serene experiences of my life.
The moon was huge... and red. It really was amazing.

Same here. I glad I didn't wake them up until I checke dit out.
When DS grows up, he's going to remember this night - and even if you didn't see the lunar eclipse, it will still mean the world that you tried.

Definitely. I love father son bonding time, even if it's driving around at 3:00 in the morning trying to find a red moon.....
It's something that he got to do special. His sister and mom were sleeping, so he did something they didn't do, and he got to be awake at 3am, which never happens.
We did get to see Mercury when it was at its brightest a few months ago, though.

The one on June 15th isn't going to be visible in North America.
But Barb is right your son is just so lucky to have a dad that gave such an effort and spent time with him!! I wish I had thought to drive around with Robbie. We just drank cocoa, nibbled cookies and looked for a clearing!!

All of which create amazing memories for your children. I rushed out last night at 3am to see the moon, because that's what my father did with me everytime there was something exciting, whether it was Hailey's comet, or a new exhibit at the MET. It made such an incredible impression on me, and I'm sure it makes on your children as well

I noticed that. Crystal clear sky, temps weren't bitter cold.... perfect night to see a lunar eclipse...... Too bad we couldn't order a redo....
