Need opinion- advice on my new cat we just adopted...
We adopted a 4 yr old cat this weekend, she checked out perfectly at the vet and was vet checked by the shelters' vet. My vet wants to check again for worms for no reason- she was checked at the shelters vet and it was negative- WWYD? get it checked again even though it was negative or do you think my vet is trying to make extra money? thoughts?

It sounds like he wants more money! do you know this vet? Do you trust them? I find it SO hard to trust doctors of any kind any more!

when's the last time she was checked?
he may want to check her bc she could have gotten them at the shelter between the time she was checked by their vet to the time she was brought home to your house. it isn't very likely though, so i don't think i'd get her re-checked unless she started showing signs of them

Update- I called the shelter and they told me that each cat is treated like they have worms in order to prevent an outbreak of them. They pulled my new fur baby's record and she is just fine- and worm free. They also told me that there woulod be signs of them by now. If anyone wants the name of a wonderful cat shelter, please FM mail me, I cannot say enough good things about this place. I am annoyed at my vet that they were trying to get more money out of me-I would spend it if I needed to, but it annoys me that they would do this. Thank you for your replies, we are so happy w/ our new cat( If anyone remembers last week my cat passed away in the middle of the night, and my other cat was walking around crying, I know we got a new cat fast, but my other cat is not walking around crying anymore).

Congrats on your new kitty. Would your vet really do that? If so, find a new vet. I am not sure if your cat should be checked again though. I personally would do it b/c I am paranoid about things like that and would want the ok from my own vet.

Actually your vet was right to want to check your newly adopted shelter cat for worms. Yes most shelters do routine dewormings on their cats however due to the life cycle of internal parasites it is easy for one deworming to miss a few of the worms. Now take a high density population like in a shelter and think about how easy it is for one cat that had a few worms missed to reinfect another cats through use of joint litter box....multiply that by many many cats and can you see how easy it is for any shelter cat, even though it has been dewormed, to still have worms? Your vet was not trying to rip you off for a couple of dollars, s/he was acting in your cat's and family's best interest.

I agree with this. I think you should be on the safe side and let your vet recheck. Plus I would be worried that the info is inaccurate, confused with another animal, etc. I would want my OWN test with my own vet.
