How to stop thumb-sucking? Who has tried Mavala Stop?

I can't wait for DS to stop sucking his thumb. Te skin on his thumbs are red & raw from thumb sucking. The skin below his lip is dry & red from the friction of his hand being there at all times.

Has anyone tried Mavala Stop? It has many positive reviews on Amazon but i wanted to ask moms that I "know"

Anyone have any other tricks to stop it?

coming from a thumb sucker (as a child) there is nothing you can do. you cant take the thumb away. they have to outgrow it...

this is the reason we introduced the paci. i do not want my son to go through what i went through with thumb sucking Chat Icon

I know what you mean. I gladly tried giving him the paci but he wouldn't take it.

We didn't try it. We used to try positive encouragement, but that wasn't enough for her. She had to stop on her own. For her 4th birthday, I took her to get her nails done, telling her it wasn't ladylike to have a beautiful manicure and suck her thumb. That lasted all of 5 minutes, because on the car ride home, she cried out in the back that her thumb got messed up when she tried to suck it.

Anyway, out of no where, a few weeks later, I tucked her into bed and noticed she wasn't sucking her thumb. I didn't say anything, I just kept my eye on her and sure enough, all on her own, she just stopped. She was already 4 years old, but that's when she did it with no issues at all.

I agree with this.. My DD (4) sucked her thumb in utero.. BOTH of them..

I had to make a deal with her that she could only suck it when she had to go to bed at night.. And that's what she does.. sometimes every night, sometimes no.. She will get rid of it on her own.. I learned to just deal with it and be happy that she doesn't have it in her mouth 24/7

Also, I tried that stuff to put on the thumb and at first DD would lick her thumb and wipe it off on her pants lol we also tried a bitter tasting hot (it was mild) sauce and that didn't work either.. the thumb is too good to pass up! lol

does it work if you give him a paci and simultaneously hand him a toy he needs both hands to use?

Thats how I got DS to stop, but he was 2m at the time. Now only uses paci for sleep at 9m.

I would not use Mavala Stop. My child got a rash from it and come to find out it has a ton of chemicals in it. I would use the positive approach with a product like "Thumbuddy To Love". It helps children break the thumb sucking habit gently and it uses positive reinforcement because it is fun and comes with a thumb puppets and story book of a hero who broke the thumb sucking habit. Google it at thumbuddytolove dot com.
My kids loved it and she still sleeps with it instead of her thumb in her mouth.
