It depends. If the email is between peers or is personal in nature, I think it's ok. If it's business related, going up or down the chain of command or going to someone outside the company, I think it's unprofessional.

I think it depends on who it is going to and the context.
Sometimes I have just included a :) instead.

I have done it once or twice over BBM with a coworker when we were joking around during a conference call, but I would NEVER use it in any sort of business correspondence...very unprofessional.

i don't use it, i just put a smile...or write 'just kidding'...i use lol alot, but at work, i don't think it is appropriate.
