DS will be 5 in April and as sweet as he can be, he can also be very rude and mean. I have only seen him behave like that with me and DD. This is also something that started with school this year.
Right now I will bring him to room and tell him that he can't talk like that to me or his sister. Then I go get him and tell him that it hurts our feelings and doesn't make us happy when he says mean things. He apologizes but will say it again.
If it make a difference, he is very sensitive so lets say he tries to initiate some sort of playing with DD and she just wants to be by her self he gets offended and starts with her.
In school he is not like this.

We do time outs or we take something away like using the wii the toy they are fighting over stuff like that. They still do it from time to time but it has lessened since we have been on top of it.

I have started "grounding" my 5 and 7 year old. No playdates, no video games, no TV, etc for one week. They get a warning when they are being fresh or not listening, and I have a 3 strikes and you are out rule. 2 warnings, then grounding for one week. If it continues, then I add days. Longest my 7 year old was grounded for was 9 days.

No playdates
No video games
No TV
No sports

They get to go to school, come home, do homework, and then they have to entertain themselves NICELY.

Works like a charm ... sometimes now all I have to do is mention the word "grounded!" and they stop.

My almost 5 yr old has been off the charts fresh for a few months now. Some of the things he says to me in his demanding loud voice has meChat Icon I have to constantly remind him good things happen to those who have good behavior and if he doesn't act appropriately he loses privleges. He was so rude he lost going to one of his best friends birthday party. I left with his siblings explaining why he wasn't going. When we got home he was good for a while and then it started again with the hitting, yelling, rudeness.Chat Icon We also use time outs in conjunction with losing privleges. So not looking fowrad to the teenage years!!!

I ground them as well. Losing screen time is enough.

Sometimes I say "Are you being disrespectful?" but now for the most part, all I have to do now is hold up my forefinger (as in "ONE....TWO....").

However nothing is 100%.

My theory was that everyone gets upset & says things they shouldn't, but I'm wondering if allowing them that "one" time is too much.

Thanks everyone, so it seems it is normal because I was also talking to one of the mom's I am friendly with in his class and she is having the same issues with her DD and it is worse since they returned from winter recess, which is what I noticed too.

I guess the only thing I can do is continue what I am doing.

Many Chat Icon 's for all the other mom's that seem to be going through the same thing now.

SD sits in time out for the amount of minutes that match her age...so right now that's 8 minutes of time out, chair to the wall, hands under her butt (otherwise she'll fidget and entertain herself with shadow puppets).

She's had some problems in school as well, when that happens we insist she write a letter of apology to be read to the person she disrespected. The letter has to include what she did and why it was wrong.
