a plumber might have to come in and snake it.

whatever you do... do NOT use Draino! I did at my old apartment and the toilet overflowed, it was so nasty. It wouldn't stop pouring out of the toilet, oh the nastiness. I read the back of the Draino AFTER I already used it and it said not to put in the toilet... I should have read that first lol.

Right!! That was the result of a bad chemical reaction. Drano is a very strong base (pH about 12) that expands as it creates gases. Thankfully, it didn't splash up in your face! I believe it is also illegal to do this and you could be subject to a fine by a city or town official.

OK I tried a couple of things that I Googled...since those didn't work, I'm going to get the snake thing from HD, then give in and call maintenance (I rent so I don't need to call a plumber). Thanks for all the tips! And I know not to use Draino--DH did this a year or so ago, and woefully regretted it!

actually there was an article on this the other week in Newsday's "home" section of the newspaper... they said try filling up a bucket of water and flush the toilet, and as it is flushing, add the water in quickly and sometimes the pressure from that helps to unclog the toilet. I tried it myself the other day and it actually worked!

Did you try boiling water? Also I find that if you just keep up the plunging it will eventually work. Good Luck!

I tried EVERYTHING, including boiling water and a toilet auger (kind of like a snake). My maintenance person is here, and I am mortified that someone else has to deal with this other than me or my DH Chat Icon. Hopefully it will work even though he just came with a plunger and nothing else!
