Question about if the Last In- First out was changed...

So I was talking to my dh and he had very good question.... if they get rid of this and its up to principals under what criteria wiill they be letting people go? Is it your rating based on observations.? is it tests scores? The test scores are only for people teaching 3-8 math and ELA so how would that work?If its based on your rating, well if there are only two ratings U and S , they would obviously get rid of all the U people but what about those who got an S? How do you say well this one is better than that one when they both got a S rating? I am SO confused

Re: Question about if the LAst In First out what changed...

This is my question too! How the heck are layoffs going to work? What if two teachers teach the same subject and both have a U? Which one goes? The more senior teacher that makes more $$? Probably! And if that is the case they are going to end up with more lawsuits than they know what to do with!! In the end it will probably end up costing the city more than keelping LIFO.

They keep talking about changing the policy, but what is the new plan for layoffs? We work in a HUGE school system...how can they make this work?

Exactly if two teachers both got S ratings what do you base it on.. seniority? Well no bc they are looking to get rid of that but isnt that the only fair way then would be seniority? UGh I hate this

another question....since LIFO is a state thing, will it affect all school districts in the state or only NYC?

Honestly I really don't think he is going to be able to get rid of LIFO. There are way to many variables.

I also think the 15,000 is crap. I already have 34 kids in my classes.....there is no way the system would be able to survive those kinds of cuts.

The bills in the Senate and Assembly are for districts with more than a million kids. There is only one district in NYS with that number- NYC.

However, if it's changed (and I really hope the people who think it won't be are right!) it would not surprise me if there was a push for it in other districts, and other unions as well.

I agree- the mayor is trying to scare the public into supporting his push to end seniority. He does not even have the state budget numbers yet.

So bloomberg to put it out in the media to make us teachers look like terrible people. So when we fight it can say we are terrible selfish people!

Bloomberg knows he can't bully around any other union and I know there are new teachers out there who think we dont need the union, so they are drinking his kool aid, so to speak. I think he is attacking our union rules, etc. one by one until he hits pay dirt and will threaten all the layoffs, too. Where are they getting those layoffs? You just spent a ton of money RECRUITING teachers!

Also, I know Buffalo is another huge district...rules might apply to them as well.

Definitely hyping to the media, but Bloomie and Cuomo would love to be union busters too. NYSUT saw this coming and did not endorse Cuomo.

heard an interesting perspective on the radio today. They compared it to Paterson threatened cutting 10K jobs last year and he ended up only cutting 500. It's all smoke and mirrors for politicians.

not sure if that will make things feel any better.
