Well, I'm going on vacation so it's on my mind...the whole travelling bit.

One of the last times we went away to Boston we found out AFTER we got to the hotel we could have brought our dog. Chat Icon
Not sure f Odie would have loved the drive, but it would have been nice to have him with us to do all that walking around.

So...
Would you/Do you bring your pets on vacation?

Re: QOTD 2/16/2010

I'm dying to bring my pets on vacation with us but I don't think I would- at least not a regular vacation in a hotel. I'd feel bad leaving them in the hotel room all day long and we're definitely not the type to bum around on vacation- we want to go out and do lots of activities and most we wouldn't be able to take our dogs with us. But we definitely want to take our dogs camping with us! I'm just afraid of them running off, but we were thinking of getting a really long tether and stake so that they could really roam the campsite (it's very big and private) but we'd still be sure they weren't going to keep on going.

I would love to, but DH would think I'm crazy.

My dad is going to cat-sit while we are on vacation.
I'm going to miss my crazy cat.

Re: QOTD 2/16/2010

When we go to our house upstate, of course, we bring them, we have to take 2 cars, but we do.

Other vacations - no. I would love to but they are 3 large dogs - lots of places won't take them and I have what is considered "bully breeds" - a Rottie & 2 German Shepherds.

I have a dog sitter who lives in my house while I am away - the kids love her and they are happy being in their house with their beds and their toys - no stress - especially for Sam who is a little skiddish to start with.

Re: QOTD 2/16/2010

We do bring them when we go to my Grandma's Lake Cottage... they Love it up there!!

For the bigger travels, I am thankful my Mom loves her grandpuppies and grandkitties enough that she stays at our house and takes care of them.

I also have a neighbor that pitches in to help when we go away (as I do with her cats)... so I am lucky.

I've never had to kennel my dogs... I'm not sure I could, even though I know there are great places... I'd just rather them their own enviornment.

We've decided this year to do more "local" travel, and will find pet friendly hotels to do this... (I know the Townhome Suites by Marriott are very pet friendly!)

No, Max isn't very good in the car, he gets pretty nervous, but thankfully whenever we go away my IL's watch him.

Re: QOTD 2/16/2010

We did once. I don't know if I'd do it again.

They weren't crazy about the long car ride (5 hours) - they did fine, but it's a long time for them to be cooped up in a car. And we made stops more frequently than we would on our own to let them out to stretch their legs and use the bathroom, but they were so distracted by the new smells that they just wanted to run around all over the place.

We were only gone for 3 days so it wasn't a major vacation, but it really limited the amount of stuff we could do. Even though the hotel was pet-friendly, we didn't want to just leave them there for hours at a time.

So ordinarily, we just pay for them to stay at a doggy daycare/boarding place near home. We know the owners and are very comfortable leaving them there, and I think they're happier there than they would be on vacation with us.

I have only done this once a long time ago. I wouldn't personally do it again b/c it stressed them out being in a hotel where they were not comfortable with their own surroundings..

Re: QOTD 2/16/2010

We ALWAYS bring our dogs on vacation, that is if we are driving. I book pet friendly hotels only. If we r fluing somewhere, we leave them home bc we have 3 and it can get $$$.

I have never brought him but I would love to! I usually have my mom watch him for us, I'll have to look into a pet friendly hotel the next time we go away.

Re: QOTD 2/16/2010

We always want to but we worry someone would steal them from the room or housekeeping would let them out by accident. B/c the reality is we would have to go some places they would not be allowed and that we would be too worried to leave them alone. Plus they are not chill dogs. They are crazy and they would bark the whole time being left alone in a strange place. And my female hates the car and gets very carsick.

But we do take them to families' houses whenever we go and my DH has to sit in the back seat with her to keep her from vomiting.

Re: QOTD 2/16/2010

We brought our dog with us when we went away last summer. The hotel was very pet friendly...they even left a welcome package for the dog. The only restriction was the dog had to be crated when we were not in the room.
