that is placed in a loving home. Newsday link
Dont know how I feel about this. People might go there just to get the money and then dump the dog somewhere else

It was just on the news..they are also going to put an ID chip in the dog, I'm hoping that's the deterrant and there is some punishment for dumping the dog, if it's done.
You would hope this was well thought out before the plan was implemented.

Hmm...I dont like this one bit. If you have to pay someone to adopt a pit, then they probably didn't want one in hte first place. I hope they thought this out VERY carefully...
what are they saying the $ is for?

what are they saying the $ is for?
Because there are so many pits at the shelter and the stigma of the breed..maybe they just should've waived the adoption fee first before deciding to give out $250 with the dog. I feel like nothing good is going to come from this.

For those of us who don't have a subscription, would someone be willing to paste the article? A lot of people aren't going to be able to read it. 
Yes, there's definitely a concern with the type of people this attracts, but I hope they're doing thorough screenings already.
My boss actually mentioned this to me today. I think in his case, it is a positive thing. He and his family is considering/not considering adopting a dog. They just lost their last cat. He heard about the story and it got him thinking about the difficulty shelters have in placing Pitts and Pitt mixes. In his case at least, it raised awareness that there is a real problem/stigma. The guy has lots of $$$ so he certainly doesn't need the money either.

Organizations... Does this mean other breed rescues or shelters finding homes for them? Not adopters?

I couldn't read the entire article either, but I didn't get the impression that they were going to give money to individuals. My reaction was that the money would go to rescue groups and similar organizations.

Brookhaven's town shelter wants to create a bull market for pit bulls.
The town Tuesday announced a plan to give $250 to certified charities, animal welfare groups and relief organizations for every pit bull they "commit to taking and placing in a safe haven," the town said in a statement.
The Horseblock Road animal shelter, which houses about 175 pit bulls and pit mixes, has had a backlog of pit bulls for several years, and the new program will get them out of the shelter and closer to placement in homes, Supervisor Mark Lesko said. The pit bulls and pit mixes comprise more than 90 percent of the dogs at the shelter, he said.
"As wonderful as these dogs are, they can be difficult to place because there is a stigma attached to them," Lesko said.
Money for the program will be provided by the Help the Animals Fund, a nonprofit group whose board of directors includes Dori Scofield, the Brookhaven shelter director.
Pit bulls constitute the majority of dogs at shelters on Long Island and beyond because of the dogs' undeserved reputation as aggressive, Scofield said. Many of the dogs exhibit aggressive behavior because they were mistreated as fighting dogs or guard dogs, but with proper care they are friendly and loyal, she said.
"They are the toughest to adopt out," she said. "If I had a shelter full of Yorkie-poos, they'd be gone in no time."
The dogs will be vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered at the shelter, Lesko said. The program is not limited to groups from New York State, he said.
The town will conduct a background check of every organization that wants to adopt dogs to ensure that the organizations are licensed nonprofits, Lesko said.

They aren't giving the money to individuals who adopt the dogs. They are giving the money to the rescues / charities / organizations who assist in placing the dogs in loving homes. That's win-win. Rescues get additional, much-needed donations and hopefully lots of great dogs will get loving, lifetime homes.

This is a GREAT incentive and will help the pitbulls at this shelter. Dori Scofield (the director of the Brookhaven shelter) is an amazing woman who truly cares about the well being of our homeless shelter pets. The $250 is only given to reputable rescue groups. In this economy rescue groups are having a harder time finding homes for dogs therefore, they are fostering dogs longer, needing to transport them to distant places, all adding up to costing the rescuers more money. This incentive helps to ease the financial burden of this very costly but worthy cause - saving dog's from being euthanized due to overcrowding.

Thank goodness they aren't giving it to individuals. I could just imagine what caliber of person they would attract. I think it's great, I hope it goes over well!

Yeah, that would be a horror! That would be as bad as the Town of Hempstead giving away their dogs for free for the past 3 months! They might as well put them on the front lawn in a box and leave them there for anyone to take!! Glad to see Brookhaven is on the right track!

I got my pit mix from the Brookhaven Animal Shelter 6 years ago. If I didn't already have 2 dogs I would go get another in a second. She is the sweetest thing ever.
