my husband had one recently he complained of severe lower back pain, and strong smelling urine no pain during urination for him though.

It often presents with a fever and a pain in the back or side just below the bottom rib. Sometimes stabbing pain, sometimes more chonic. Not always pain with peeing. If you have this you need to go to the doctor as soon as you can.
If you have a urinary tract infection you usually have pain with peeing and feel like you have to pee a lot even though only a little comes out. Sometimes you have this for a little while before you get the kidney infection.
Do you have it and did you go to the doc yet?
