hoarse voice in a newborn?

ok so i am the new mom with a million questions today!

ds has a hoarse voice today. He is 6 weeks old

yesterday he had a rough hour or so with lots of crying. I think because of gas/constipation/spitting up.

Has anyone's little one ever has a hoarse voice from crying? I am sooo afraid he is coming down with something! he was a premie and im paranoid

Re: hoarse voice in a newborn?

My baby girl is the same age. 6 weeks 2 days and her voice sounds hoarse too. I think its because of the crying for the same reason as yours and she has been congested and ive been sucking snot out so I dont think that helps. I brought her to the Dr a few weeks ago because I thought she was sick cause her voice sounded hoarse then too but the Dr said she was fine. I know how hard it is not to worry about everything because believe me I do too but i think they will be fine Chat Icon

Re: hoarse voice in a newborn?

Is she coughing? Could be croup. My dd had that as an infant. Cried with a hoarse voice then developed a croupy cough. But otherwise maybe she strained from crying. Poor thing :(

Spitting up+hoarse voice = possible reflux. The larynx (voice box) isn't meant to be drenched in hydrochloric acid and the result could be swelling/irritation translating to hoarse voice. Is she having signs of discomfort after feeding? Arching her back? Coughing when laying flat? Spitting up frequently? If it continues I would talk to the ped. DC could be comming down with something too, but the comment about spitting up makes me think reflux.

Thanks for your response..I was thinking this too. I have mentioned it to the dr...but then it got better for 2 weeks or so (less spitting up, not uncomfy after he eat) but then yesterday boom it was back...but it only happens for 2 or 3 feedings a day...after he ate, arching his back, etc. I will talk to ped again. Is reflux known to come and go like that? poor little guy!

Re: hoarse voice in a newborn?

DS lost his voice from crying so much when he was just a day old. It happens! Talk to your ped if you're very concerned, but I wouldn't worry too much.

Sorry, I have not been on. It depends on the severity of the reflux. Sometimes people in general only get discomfort when its severe. I would definitely look into it. Sounds like he has the symptoms. If the acid is reaching his laryngeal area that can definitely cause a hoarse sounding voice.

Thanks again! I wound up calling ped on sat and she agreed that it sounded like reflux. She is having us try 1/4 of tsp of malox 2x per day and see if it helps. So far I haven't noticed much of a difference. She said give it a few days and if its not better bring him in. I just feel so bad for him when he gets so upset and uncomfortable. Chat Icon

Re: hoarse voice in a newborn?

I totally understand. DS had bad reflux (with some suspicious pneumonias). He was on baby zantac at first and then Prilosec. The prilosec helped, but here are some other hints you may try:

- divide feedings up to smaller, more frequent feedings
- take breaks during the bottle. we used to give him a break every 2 oz and burp him.
-sit him upright for at least 20 minutes after a feeding.
-crib wedge also helped. at daycare his wedge didnt fit so we put folded blankets under the mattress.

At around 10 months we took him off the medication and he has been ok.
