Question for those of you with bad lower backs

I badly sprained/strained my lower back a few months back, which thankfully has pretty much healed, but I still wake up with pretty bad stiffness and sometimes a bit of pain. It lessens throughout the day and I usually feel no (or very little) pain or stiffness by noon. The problem is, I love to do a light workout in the morning (either pilates or yoga), but my back is just too stiff. Any ideas as to what I can do to ease the pain/stiffness and get my a.m. workout in?

Thanks!

Do you do any stretching before you go to bed to help with the stiffness? I would also do stretching before you do pilates/yoga.

my back always feels better after a long, hot shower. on days when i work out, that means two showers.

my back also is less stiff usually when i'm in the habit of doing yoga regularly and have decent ab strength - makes a huge difference for me.

I have lower back pain and i go to a chiropractor for stim and heat. I don't always let him adjust me but the stim and heat relax the muscles. This may help you?

I do a lot of pilates and there are certain exercises that open me up a lot but if you are having trouble with that anyways, not sure more Pilates will help.

I never thought of going to a chiro just for stim & heat. I'm definitely going to look into that.

Thanks for all of your help, ladies. I tried the stretching today. It didn't help much, but I think that had more to do with the weather. And I will try the hot shower next time. I don't know why I didn't think of that because there are days I literally just stand there and let the hot water pound my back because it feels so good.
