Disgusting!! Dog & kitty litter help!

First I have to say

OK, now that I got over that, I need some help!

My dog seems to think that the litter box is his own treat dispenser ( once more, sorry). We can't lock him out of the room that the litter box is in. We yell at him anytime he goes near it. But this morning we get up and he's wiped his face on our (new) futon to get the litter and cat stuff off his face. His water dish is full of litter and cat stuff, and the living room carpet has it too (from him rubbing his face on there also).

It is disgusting!!! And we have a baby on the way in about 2 weeks - I don't want everything covered in cat cr@p because the dog is GROSS.

Does anyone have experience with this? How do I make him stop?!?!?!

I used to have the same problem, the dogs think it's a buffet, it's disgusting. The only thing I was able to do was block them from getting in, I was able to set it up so only the kitty could get to it - I got the box with the cover.

Or if you can put it in a room, I put a baby gate up that wedged in the door and left enough room on the bottom so only the kitty could get underneath.

Thanks! I think we're going to try the cover for a while and see if that works. I think the cat would like it too...the litter box was just too big for the bathroom so it is now in a room that we use a bit more, I think she'll appreciate the extra privacy.

Our old dog used to eat the kitty poop too!!! absolutley gross and unacceptable.

Do you have a basement? we put the
kitty litter box down there and have a cat door in the basement door. Our new
dog never goes down there.

No basement.

DH wanted to put the litter box in the garage but I put my foot down on that one. A - It was WAY too cold this winter for that. B - We rarely go in there, so he would never clean out the box.

You will have to find a way. There is no way to stop him other than limiting access.

I once read cat poop to dogs is like potato chips to us, a snack. My female dog would do the same if she happened across some cat poop in the lawn. UGH.

We had that problem!

The only way we found to solve it was:
we put the litter box (with a hood) in a closet...and turned the opening toward the closet wall.
The cats go in the closet, hop over and in... and the dogs can't get their heads anywhere near the opening!

My parents' dogs do this too. They put up a baby gate and it seemed to deter them for a little while. The cats were able to jump over the gate to get to the box.

We have the exact same problem and unfortunately have not found a solution yet... i never knew dogs did this until we got both dogs and cats...

i bought a kitty litter house for my cat, its turned around in a corner of a wall and the cat can only get to the litter.

its worked wonders
