LI Marathon
Any one here planning on doing this in May? If so, where are you in training? I'm registered and this is my first so not sure if I'm on track or not. I got sidelined for 10 days or so and feel like I am really far behind now!

Re: LI Marathon
I'm doing it. My training is nowhere near where it should be at all! I think I should be up to long runs of close to 20 miles at this point which I'm not. I don't have a strict time goal though, just gonna go out there & do my best & see what happens. I'm going to get some long runs in within the next month, want to get up to 20-22 miles or so, so that I know I can cover the distance that day. I've only been running on the treadmill through the winter (haven't run outside since November), but as the weather gets nicer I'll be going to the parks, boardwalk, etc. for a change of scenery.
How's your training going?

Re: LI Marathon
I'm about the same. My longest run to date was 14 miles and then I came down with a nasty cold. I'm supposed to do 18 miles this week (according to the plan I'm using) but that means I will have skipped the 16 mile. Trying to decide if I should just continue on in my plan so I stay on schedule or drop back a week but not get the full plan in. I don't have a finishing time in mind either--at this point I'm seriously just hoping I can finish at all! This treadmill running stinks though doesn't it. I am never planning a run like this again in the spring! I can't stand it!

Re: LI Marathon
stay on schedule Misha! You missed your 16, oh well! move on and put it behind you. don't try to make up the miles - concentrate on doing the miles in your schedule well. If you haven't run an 18 miler yet, it may be a bit shocking w/o that 16 (personally i think over 15 miles is a whole other animal), but see how you do. take it slow - your long runs should be done very slow (2 minutes slower than your projected marathon pace)
Is this your first marathon? You really only have to do one 20 mile run for your first - and that should be 3 weeks before marathon day.

Re: LI Marathon
Thanks for the tips Erica. Yes, this is my first (and probably only!) one. Ok, I will just carry on and see what happens. The hardest thing for me with the long runs is just dealing with the boredom. I go crazy trying to think of things to think about! I think the plan I am on just has me doing two 20 milers before the race (last one is definitely 3 weeks before).

Everyone says they are done...LOL but I''ll ask you again 2 weeks after
Boredom: do you listen to music? I would actually count songs. I multiply the mileage by 2.5 songs - so 50 songs. each song you have to keep track of, so you are focusing on something else. Also, listen to the lyrics, some lyrics i have known for 20 years and then I stop to think about them and I'm like ***?!
I also do multiplication. I take a house number and multiple it by the speed limit sign...things like that. It takes a good while to do some of the bigger numbers.
For you first marathon, I (personally) think 2 20 milers might be a turnoff, but more time on your feet is not bad. But if you are nervous about going straight to 18, you could modify your plan and only do one 20 miler, but that's up to you and the research you have done.

Re: LI Marathon
Ok, so I didn't make it to 18 miles. Could only do 16.5 and the main reason was I was too thirsty. So here is my next question for you, what do people do during training for drinking? I know during the race I can make stops to hydrate but yesterday I did over 16 miles with nothing because I felt weird carrying a bottle of water. What do you do for these long training runs?
As for the boredom thing--conquered! I downloaded an audiobook and it was perfect! I'm taking your advice on modifying and I'm only going to do one 20 miler since I have yet to get to 18. I also am only running 3 times a week so that be why my program has me doing 2 20 milers. I just can't find the time to add another day of running!

Re: LI Marathon
I'm only doing a half marathon but what I have done for the hydration is slip $2 in my ipod arm band and during my run there is a laundry mat with a vending machine - I just pop in and buy a bottle of water and keep going.

Re: LI Marathon
That's a great idea. I pass right by a 7-11 about half way through. I will try that for next time.

Re: LI Marathon
I use a fuel belt. You definitely need to hydrate over 14-15 miles - any time during the year...6-8 in the summer.
I have done audio books a few times and they work out really well.
I think your modification sounds good.
my fuel belt has 4 bottles and I go through them in the summer and fill up at sprinklers!
I'll be there to cheer some people on, so I'll look out for you! I know I'll definitely be at mile 3...after that I'm going to the finish to watch the 10K and HM finish.

Re: LI Marathon
My husband has one but I never thought to get one. I guess I should consider it but I swear I am never running again after this one so not sure I should invest at this point!
I will look for you at the 3 mile mark. I will probably be at the very back of the crowd!!!!

I say this every time! John was standing at mile 25 at Hartford and he said at least 10 people said it to him as he cheered waiting for me...his response was "That's what they all say!"
Just wait until you get the 50 state challenge bug, like me!
