what would you have done? guinness cake and school

last night my niece was over (surprise right Chat Icon ) while I was cookng for tonight's meal.

I had made banana choco chip muffins on Tues night and she wanted to bring a few in to school. she said she would cut a few of them into small pieces to share ( Chat Icon) but I didn't want her to bring in "old" muffins.

but she still wanted to bring something in and I was making Guinness chocolate cake. she wanted to bring that in for her class.

dh told me to just say it was chocolate cake but I felt weird. one of her classmantes I know has an allergy to nuts...and who knows that other allergies they have.

but my real issue was...do I send an 8-year-old to school with Guinness cup cakes....???

what do you think about that? as a parent, if your kid came home and said he had a Guinness chocolate cupcake, would you be upset? and as a parent, would you send your child to school with Guinness chocolate cupcakes?

I felt bad but...it was just too risky I think Chat Icon

I wouldn't mind if my child ate that at school-- we have no food allergies, and I know the alcohol is cooked off. But some parents are really sensitive about stuff like this, so I wouldn't bring it.

I fancy myself to be very open-minded, and very "Euro-minded." I would have thought it was cool and probably would have asked for the recipe. Chat Icon

I wouldn't have minded b/c I know the alcohol cooks off & DS doesn't have any allergies that I know of yet. & I would have asked DC why they didn't bring a piece home for me! sounds delish!

I posted about this exact same thing a few months back, I wanted to make a Chocolate Guinness cake for my sons school fair. I asked here, and everyone said no.

But to be honest, there is only about 3/4 cup of guinness in it, and it does really burn off...but, there are muslim kids in his school and they are forbidden to have alcohol, burnt off or not, so its not really the done thing to do in a school!

I wouldn't have been mad if DS came home and said he ate it, but I wouldn't feel it was appropriate to send into school.

I, on the other hand, would love some right about now!!

I am so glad I erred on the side of caution here!

thanks ladies. I didn't even think about those in "dry" homes. the muslim thing would have been a slimmer chance though, since they are in catholic school

Chat Icon My son was at a Church of England school, and our Catholic Schools have their share of Muslim pupils too!

As a parent, I would be upset because my kids will not be eating anything with alcohol in it nor will they be eating anything with pork (religious reasons- Muslim).

Re: what would you have done? guinness cake and school

That would have bothered me.....but I have issues with alcohol related things since there is terrible alcoholism on both sides of my family, and a teensy bit on my husband's. Not that a piece of cake is going to make anyone an alcoholic....but we don't really drink in our house, so it's not something I'd want a stranger introducing to my child.

I've seen this chart before too, so yes, I would have been annoyed if somebody gave my DD Guiness cupcakes without asking my permission. I too was under the misconception that all the alcohol was burned off before I saw this.

Re: what would you have done? guinness cake and school

I haven't been on the site in a while (hi everyone!) but having just had someone close to me go through rehab, I've learned that not all alcohol cooks off, so I would think anything alcohol based wouldn't be a good idea for school.
