Re: Here is a question
When the sperm & egg join, they form a zygote, which is a living cell & therefore "life".... so that is my vote.

Re: Here is a question
Having seen the worst, I'd say until the baby is born the potential for life exists. Unfortunately there are no guarantees until that time.

I agree.
Any living organism is alive.... even living cells in ponds, and parasites, etc.
and ETA: I was surprised to learn how early on the fetus can actually "feel" things.

I agree...
sperm meeting and egg does not guarantee a life will form.
ETA: i chose viable

just to clarify, i am thinking of doing ivf and am having a conflict with not only my religion, but with what would become of the other zygotes i did not implant.

i cant help you with the religion aspect... BUT you can probably donate the rest of the eggs for others to use...

If they are embryos (fertilized eggs vs just frozen eggs), there is now embryo adoption. The embryo is adopted and implanted in either an adoptive mother or a gestational carrier (unlike a surrogate mother who uses her own egg) for an adoptive mother.

Re: Here is a question
I just wanted to drop a line and say you have raised an interesting question on this topic that I never would have thought of, and I can understand your conundrum, although I am not particularly religious.
That being said, I'd love to offer you support in your decision, whatever that may be, and I hope everything works out beautifully for you.

And truly, there are no guarantees after that. Earlier this week I found out someone I went to school with was holding her 4 month old DD when she died in her arms from SIDS.

Re: Here is a question
Viability - and in response to your dilemma you generally have 4 options:
Destroy the embryos Donate them to another couple Freeze them for future use for yourself Donate them to medical research

Re: Here is a question
I believe when sperm meets egg, and if the outcome is no viability, it is still a life.
This is interesting though...

Re: Here is a question
To me life begins at birth, before then there is the potential for life but unfortunately not every potential embryo makes it.
As for your dilemma, I feel for you. I think one of the above posters gave you the options for the remaining eggs. I know that in IVF the doctor stimulates you to have multiple eggs, but is it possible for them to only try to inseminate 2 or 3 of them or do they have to do all of the ones they get?
