Restaurants and WW

This is my problem! I never know what to order and ned up getting a salad with grilled chicken. But honestly, that does nothing for me and I am never satisfied.

What do you get when you go out to dinner? We are going to Millers for my DS b-day tomorrow (his choice) ..... any suggestions?

We don't go out a lot...but DH wanted to go to Applebees. I ended up going online and checking out their menu ahead of time and putting the nutrition info into the calculator to figure out how many points everything was. Then I went from there as to what to eat.

It can be very hard sometimes, but it helps to plan ahead.

For chain resturants, I go online ahead of time. I calculate the points for a few different entrees I like- when I get there I'll decide which I'm in the mood for.

Non-chains are a little more difficult. you can always stick your resturant guide in your purse and then sneak a look under the table Chat Icon OR if you know the cuisine you'll be eating ahead of time- flip through the book and see whats high in points and whats lower.

Some good go to's: appetizers (depending what it is will probably still be high in points [mozz sticks, chicken fingers, etc] but on the bright side its pre-portioned).

Shrimp- unless it is deep fried it can be a great go to because its low in points.

For italian- whole wheat pasta with red sauce (I eyeball about 2 cups- depending where you go its sometimes about half a portion).

Chili (without cheese) is usually relatively low yet filling. Chicken noodle soup as well. You can get that with a side salad.

If I know I'm going out to eat, I try to save about 20 points for dinner. (9 points through the day is diffcult but very possible). I've found there are a decent number of entrees for around 20 points. (For example the pancake stack I get at ihop is 21 points. If I know I"m going, I'll try to limit my point intake throughout the day).

Most restaurants have their menus online. So you could look up the menu before hand and choose a few thing that look good and calculate the points before hand. Just remember to keep portion sizes in mind b/c most restaurant servings are very generous.

Re: Restaurants and WW

I usually use restaurant food as my "bad" day unless I really research it beforehand as I used to know exactly what to eat when I was doing WW many years ago.

Millers probably has the menu and nutrition online. Try to save as many points as you can for dinner and dip into your weekly points a little if you have to. Honestly, for me some places are totally not worth trying to eat healthy at. At some places the healthy meals taste awful and I get mad that I wasted my money and also my points on them. I'd rather go a few points over and enjoy my meal, especially if it's a special occasion.

My other tip is to decide ahead of time if you are having a drink, appetizer, entree and dessert. That will add up to a lot of points even if you go pretty healthy. Go in with a plan and stick with it. For me I know if I'm drinking then I'm probably skipping either appetizer and/or dessert. Or if I really want a certain appetizer or dessert then I'll skimp on my main meal.

I also know that restaurant portions generally are not the size portion we should be having. I usually split my meal in half as soon as I get it and ask for a container to wrap it up. That way I'm not tempted to eat the whole thing. I also don't really limit myself. I'll get an appetizer (usually mozz sticks) but instead of having 4 I'll have 1 or 2. I'm not a huge dessert persion so I don't really have to worry about that.

I also drink a ton of water during dinner to help me get full so I don't overstuff myself with food.
