COLD SORES?

UGH, I am soooo so upset.

About 2 days ago I got a small cold sore. I thought nothing of it as I always get them since I am a young child. I was careful not to kiss DD near the mouth, etc. but I DID kiss her on her head and her cheek and possibly other parts of her body...I honestly don't remember and wouldn't have thought anything of it but when I went to work today my co-worker told me that it's VERY DANGEROUS for a newborn (DD is almost 10 weeks old)

I just got off the phone with my pediatrician and he too confirmed that it's very dangerous and that I should look out and call him if the baby gets any lesions.

I AM COMPLETELY BESIDE MYSELF...I feel so horrible and I am just a crying mess!!!!!!!!!! I hope everything is okay and she doesn't develop anything and of course, reading stories on the internet about how infants can die from this--I just about feel like I'm going to lose my mind. Chat Icon

Re: COLD SORES?

Same thing happened to me! Google is the devil. I get them when I get sick. DS was less than 2 months old when I got 2. I was SOOOO careful, I've had them since I was a kid so I knew all about the constant hand washing, be careful where you touch, etc. Well, I was holding ds and he turned his head so fast and his head rubbed up against my lips and I freaked out. I made a call to the ped and she said to relax. She gave me a cream and said I should use it every time I get one because it makes the virus (not the cold sore) go away within a day or two making it much more safe for DS. She also said that it would have to get into his eyes, mouth, or nose for it to spread and to just look out for any bumps but that he would more than likely be fine and sure enough, he never got one.
Good luck, I'm sure everything will be ok!

Re: COLD SORES?

Thank you so much!!! You helped calm me down. I think the worst part is just thinking about these last 2 days BEFORE I knew it was such a big deal and doubting myself...did I kiss her on her face? did I touch her bottle by mistake after touching my lip? etc...UGH!!!

Just going to pray!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: COLD SORES?

If you have always gotten them, then you have lLESS reason to worry as your baby would be born with immunity thanks to your body providing her with that. Not sure how long the immunity would last, but a few mths I believe.

We had a different situation here but similar. When DD was one month old, DH got a cold sore and he hadn't had one for years before that. I have NEVER EVER had one, so I knew my DD would not have the immunity. Luckily DH didn't kiss her too much before the cold sore came out. He was very careful after that, knowing what we knew about DD lacking immunity to cold sores based on my lack of immunity. Thankfully she was ok but I was told that it would start off as a low grade fever, not really a cold sore if she DID get something. I was worried and checking her temp for weeks....it was scary b/c like you we weren't sure when he kissed her last, esp near her eyes, etc.

But I think she has your immunity so she should be ok but DO NOT kiss her anyway just to be safe, and be careful after touching your mouth, etc.Chat Icon And get a script from your DR for Zovirax (I think it's called that) a pill that will dry up the lesions much faster. That's what DH took to clear his up faster so we could get that out of the house.
