Question about testing

Hi,
Had my 12 week appt last night, even though I was really 12 weeks 6 days. Baby was actually measuring 13 weeks 1 day, but he doesn't change due dates. So the NT scan , I think that's what it's called, wasn't even offered. He said by next time we go in, May 3rd, we need to think about the quad screening. He really seemed to be against it. He said he and his wife didn't get it, and he thinks they cause undue stress. I always assumed I'd get it, now DH doesn't want to after listening to the doctor. From reading LIF, all of you seem to get it. Is it unusual to not get it done? I'm 33, will be 34 at birth of baby. Blood tests at 7 weeks all came back fine, mom had a healthy baby at 41. I'm so confused. Any advice???

Re: Question about testing

I'm confused - you can get an NT Scan up until 13w6d. I would try to get in for one right away and then decide what blood tests you want (personally I am getting them all).

Re: Question about testing

It wasn't even offered to me with #1. I was pi$$ed but only b/c I just selfishly wanted to see the baby. I confronted my doctor about it, who is laid back about things and he apologized and said "I knew you wouldn't do anything if something came back badly". I said as a first time mother, I should be told about every test that is offered whether or not I want it done. I would just ask your doctor.

Re: Question about testing

1. you can get the NT scan up to 13w6d so if you want one I'd ask about it ASAP

2. I thought the quad blood test screening was pretty routine? My OB told me we were low risk based on my age and NT results, and asked if we wanted to go for the16w sono. She said she didnt think it was medically necessary but the lab likes to do the 16w anatomy scan to monitor growth and it's a good chance to see the baby again and to find out the gender earlier than the 20w anatomy scan. We opted to do it - we wanted the diagnostic sono, wanted to see the baby again, and wanted a change to find out the gender early. Everything came back great. The 16w sono seems relatively uncommon though, my original OB didn't offer it and many of my friends only got the blood test at 16w

Re: Question about testing

I think the NT scan was actually optional for me. Maybe you have to actually ask for it?

Re: Question about testing

He didn't say I couldn't get any testing, he just didn't feel they were necessary. His reasoning for why he didn't have one with his own daughter is unless you are going to terminate, you may get bad numbers and then worry for weeks until amnio results come in, or you could wait until birth and confront any complications then. I'm find not having the NT testing. Most of my friends had the quad screening only, not both, I was just wondering if everyone got the quad screening. I'm sure I'll get a 16 week sono, I've gotten one everytime I've gone in (8 weeks, 10 weeks, 12 weeks) He likes his sono machine.Chat Icon But the quad screening from what I've read is 4 blood tests, I think that is what I need to decided about. I know my cousin got a false positive, bad numbers that ended up being okay after the amnio, so I think this is what he is referring to.

Re: Question about testing

I declined this test with my first pregnancy. My reason was watching someone close to me get bad results and agonizing over it. She wound up going for the amnio and everything was fine, but she was miserable for weeks.

My son was born just shy of my 34th birthday with no problems.

This pregnancy I did the test because of my age. I will be just shy of 36 when my baby is born and really did not want an amnio just because I am 35. I did the scan and bloodwork in the hopes that my results would make me more comfortable with that decision. It wound up working for me. I got great results and have had no issues with any test results since.

It's a tough choice, but I will say I have seen quite a few people get "bad" results and torture themselves for weeks waiting for an amnio...only to have everything turn out ok.
