why are certain districts getting hit harder than others?
My cousin is in her 4th year teaching English at Sachem and she most likely will be excessed for September. I believe they are excessing roughly 300 teachers  They did their first round in elementary school and the next round is the middle schools where she works.
I know in other districts the teachers have taken a pay freeze or even pay cuts. Is Sachem not willing to give in alittle? Or is it just that they are such a big district?
ETA: I believe my cousin said they are excessing people with up to 10 years teaching. Another coach/teacher with 7 years got a pink slip.

It's all just a money thing I think. Albany is cutting WAY back in this budget. My district is losing $2 million.
One of my good friends lives in Massapequa SD. That district rents out 2 schools that they aren't currently using - 1 to BOCES and 1 to the NCPD. At a recent PTA meeting my friend was told that the revenues from those facilities offset a lot of their district expenses, so they aren't going to really feel the budget cuts from Albany, and their taxes aren't going to go up a lot next year.
Another example I recently heard about. Levittown SD is going to full day Kindergarten next year, and they are laying off a bunch of teachers - some with 10 years of experience. But the money for K is from a 2 year grant that can't be spent on anything else.
I'm sorry for your friend, it's a tough time in education.  I heard rumors that Sachem and Huntington are looking to get rid of Kindergarten completely to save money for other programs.

From what I understand, Sachem relies more heavily on state aid than some other districts so the cuts have hit them harder. Their aid went down $16 million for next year. I know several teachers there, and I know they took little and zero increases in recent years just like others are doing right now. They have also had little to no increase in the tax levies the passed few years.

the bigger the district the more aid they receive from the state. Sachem is a huge district as is Brentwood, Central Islip and other districts being hit hard. because the state aid was cut, they lost a lot as the state aid is a higher percentage of their budget.

I definitely think size matters - you are going to see more layoffs in the bigger schools - but the percentage may be similar.
I work in a small district and I think the total number so far is 11-13.
Albany and DC have cut SO MUCH money. Don't forget GWB's wonderful No child left Behind (RtI is law in 2012) with NO funding!
Stimulus money has run out. There were quite a few schools that were getting federal money to keep jobs. But that was only for 2 years I believe.
We as LIers pay way more to NYS than we ever get back, but we keep electing these politicians that don't fight for our fair share! Look at some of the upstate districts that get new buildings built on the state's dollar, yet we tax ourselves for years to come with bonds.
taking a pay freeze isn't always possible. 1. Legally, it's not a freeze if there is already a contract - it's only a deferment. We live in a country where living up to contracts/torts are an important part of our legal system.
2. Some districts might be saving the freeze for next year when things are going to be much worse b/c of Cuomo's tax cap.
sidenote - I believe Huntington is going from full day to half day Kindergarten.

I work for Sachem, am not on a tenure track, and will be out of a job come June.
It's a hard thing to deal with....

I haven't spoken to her to find out.
I do know she was told she was in danger of being excessed. Was your brother told this? My cousin has only been teaching 4 years.

Yes he was called in with many many other,s maybe a month ago? On monday,he texted me and he said that the list came out as to how many in each area. Then he said later he was told he wasnt getting excessed (although I believe this could change if budget doesnt pass). This is my brothers 3rd yr.

OMG ok so
this is my FIRST OFFICIAL POST on LIF...
i was on LIW for 2.5 yrs now, finally made the switch over, and as a teacher, thought "oh yay teacher board!!"
OMG IM SO DEPRESSED NOW!!! 
not that I was unaware of any of the SICKENINGLY TRUE statements, but to hear them validated by other teachers (I'm in a newlywed bubble, i talk to basically just my husband and parents because I have no time for anything else LOL) so to hear it from so many others in other SD's, it's like a rude awakening from continuing to tell myself "it's not going to end up that bad"
:( anyway, HELLO FELLOW TEACHERS! I teach 7th grade math at WFMS!

This is why some unions/teachers do not want to take pay freezes. In the end, it does not save jobs. Not unless there is a written agreement that pay freeze= saved jobs. Often, there is no written agreement to that effect. All it amounts to is lost income to the teachers and more job cuts.

My union just forfeited our raise for next year. We were told it would save jobs but in the end, I do not believe it. Nothing was in writing and we basically did it just to look good for the community.
