Re: Losing nails when running?

not as common for a half, but it can happen if you are doing hard training, not wearing socks or wearing shoes that are not big enough.

You have to remember that training for a marathon has quite a few training runs that are 2.5+ hours long.

The best sign I even read while running a marathon was "Toenails are overrated' Definitely got a chuckle out of me. I don't mind showing my toes either...it's almost a badge of honor...LOL Chat Icon

Re: Losing nails when running?

I've never lost any toenails running a half or training for it. I think it's more common for further distances.

Good!!!

I was told the same thing when I was doing the LI 2 Day breast cancer walk last year (It's 35 miles over 2 days - 20 the first day, 15 the second) and my feet were fine!

Re: Losing nails when running?

I get black toenails all the time....unfortunately for me, I think it's just the way my toenails are. I always get them on the toes right next to my big toes. My shoe size is big enough, I've had it checked time and time again. So I just accepted it. My podiatrist recently suggested I wear thinner socks (not exactly sure how, but he gave me this explanation). He is a runner, so I usually trust his advice. Also, I just got new orthotics that he told me will prevent me from "slipping" in my shoe so much. Anyway, they are common, some of use are luckier than others to avoid them. I'm definitely not one of the lucky ones :) In the summer, I just wear dark toenail polish over them!!

I've been very lucky...I've never had a problem with my toenails, even when training for the full. It is common though.

Re: Losing nails when running?

I've lost my pinky toe nail and I've gotten a black toe nail. It can be common but less likely if your shoes fit correctly!

is you second toe longer than your big toe? mine is and that's the one that suffers the most (but I have lost them on the smaller ones too)

Who is your podiatrist? and where? I would love to find one who's a runner - I have plantar fasciitis and one pod told me to stop running Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Losing nails when running?

Lost 2 nails on the same toe (2nd toe in) got running sneakers 1/2 size bigger and keep nail short and do not have a prob anymore.
This wld happen on 4-6 mile runs.

No - the strange thing is that the toes I get them on are not longer than my big toe!! What I think is happening is that the way my toes are aligned (if that makes sense), they are rubbing somehow. Not sure. I'm hoping once I break in the new orthotics that they will help at least try to prevent them.

My podiatrist is Dr. McGuiness. I see him in his West Islip office since it's practically around the corner from me, but I believe he has an office somewhere east of here. St. James or Farmingville? He is the best, I've been going to him for 7 years now. At one time, he was some world class runner. He still runs, just not competitively anymore. He works with runners all the time and is not one of those "well don't run if hurts doctors". Runner's Edge recommends him to everyone. I would not go to anyone else. If you need more info, feel free to FM me. One of the girls I know from my gym went to him for PF. Also, not sure where you live, but I mentioned on another thread on here that I go to a chiropractor who does active release treatment. He always told me that he treats PF on runners too - the soft tissue treatment helps with managing it so you can run. Just something you can do in addition to seeing a podiatrist. Hope that helps.

I could do WI - it's about 20-30 min from me, but sounds like it might be worth it!

I really think you will like him! It makes such a difference seeing a podiatrist who is a runner or who at least is used to treating runners. He always does whatever he can to get you back to running without pain as soon as possible. I believe he works Mon-Wed-Fri in WI. I know you're pregnant now and might not be rushing to see him right now, but if you need more info, just let me know!

Re: Losing nails when running?

my friend had problems when training for the marathon with her toenails. I am always afraid mine will fall off but I have been lucky. I keep my nails cut short and I wear running socks and good sneakers and I haven't had any problems.

I think its caused by the toe nails banging around against your sneakers.

Re: Losing nails when running?

When I was training for my first half I had such issues with bruised toenails and I lost a few at different times. Part of this was that my sneakers needed to be half size bigger and then also b/c I stepped in water at mile 5 and ran with a damp sneaker for another 8 miles it was horrible! However I have since done 3 half's and several more long runs and have no more bruised toenails and have not lost any thank god!
