how do you know how much dirt to order?

we are trying to figure out how much soil we need to have delivered for our backyard lawn which needs to be leveled some. Any suggestions on how to measure? most companies sell by yards but how does that work into how you measure?? confused! any help would be appreciated for the novice here

And any companies you've used for top soil that are cheap and good?

We just estimated.

We ordered 20 yards and made a sizable island in our yard and another bordering the property line on the side of our house.

We paid 12/yard and had it dropped in front of our house. It was pretty good topsoil - clean.

I got the phone number from a sign by our 7'11.

I was told one yard would cover a 10x 10 section with a depth of 2 inches. Village garden center in east islip was really helpful. If you give them the measurements he'll help you figure out how much dirt you need.

It is fertilized for planting. I will try and get to my 7'11 today - Otherwise sometime in the next day or 2.

If you tell them the size of the area and how deep you need it, they can tell you how much you will need.
