Room (complete spoilers) - Don't open if you haven't read it - if you did read it, please come in!!!
I don't know why so many people didn't like the ending?
I loved the ending - the facct that he needed closure, and he also noticed how small the room was after being outside in the world...
I loved how he got to live with the grandma and steppa for a while, and gained trust in others and himself being away from his mom....

I just felt that this book was really good in the beginning...AWESOME in the middle - I was seriously on the edge of my seat freaking out - and then the last third of the book was just plain BORING to me. It had such a good climax, then BOOM it fell flat for me.

Yes, the tone definitely changed, but I loved that. It was so realistic - and watching the way Jack had to learn about the world and connect with other people was so thrilling to me... I really enjoyed it!!!

I just finished this a minute ago....AMAZING! Thanks so much for the rec, Liza. What a moving story! I havent read a book that made me cry in a long time.
I wouldnt even know where to start......what a brave little boy. The part where he is surprised bc he could take two orange lollipops made me cry! And how he kept 6 toys, I couldnt even. It was amazing to me how he wanted all the stuff from Room, like Rug and Remote, etc bc it was comforting to him but stirred such strong emotions in his mom, understandably.
By the end though, I was so mad at his mom for trying to take her own life. I understand why, but she was all that boy had, she was all that was familiar to him, he was so lost and had been through so much and lost so much even though he was "freed" he had lost all he had ever known. I couldnt bear for him to lose her too. It really put a bad taste in my mouth in regards to her. I felt almost betrayed, KWIM?
However, it gave him a chance to be independent and to learn and grow and trust, but still.
What did you think of her decision to tell him Outside wasnt real? Do you think it just made it harder on him and she should have told him the truth from the get go?
LOVED the ending too. Was it fireworks and a show stopper, no, but it was just what they needed.
LOVED IT!

In the interview, she said, "What was I supposed to say? All this is out there for you but you can't have any of it?"
also - developmentally, it was easier. By the time he turned 5, he was understanding so much more, she was finally able to share some truth with him....

She definitely did, I still wondered though, was it the best call to make. Then again, hindsight is always 20/20

I didn't like the ending because I wanted more. I wanted the story to continue for a few more hundred pages!

Ahhh - that's the sign of an amazing book!!!!! I felt the same way. I still think about this book.
I was thinking about the mom - can you imagine everything she had to deal with:
Being 19 Being kidnapped Trapped in a room getting raped getting pregnant and having her first child die in birth Getting pregnant again pretty much right after that happened Raising a baby and child in isolation post partum depression etc.....

I thought the ending was perfect - they were embarking on their new life together. Best way to end - with a new beginning. I think the thing that impressed me the most was how she was able to teach him and allow him to grow and develop as well as she did while being confined to one room. As a mother of a 20 month old - I can't get out of the house fast enough (with DS) some days - he's so BORED when we spend more than a couple days in a row indoors.

I got the audio DVD's and listened to them with the kids in the car. It was a great story and my 5yr old had a ton of questions b/c of the story. A great learning experience. As soon as we'd get in the car Roman would say, "hurry up let's hear what Jack's doing." Hearing the story told in Jacks voice also made it heartwrenching. I think it would make a great movie!

Easily a few more hundred pages! I did enjoy the story...a lot. But the ending left me so empty. I wanted to know if he ever went in a plane, where they moved when they left the independant living facility, WHAT HAPPENED IN COURT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh I could go on! Overall, I enjoyed the book but was left with no closure for myself!
