NYC Teachers, Come On...Please, I Need Your Advice!!!
I am in my 11th year of teaching, ten of which have been at the school I am in now. I was one of the select few to open up this NEW school in 2001(I have building senority--which means nothing, really). It's an Early Childhood School.
In any event, the same principal has been there since we opened. She is Hispanic and always favored her own:) I am Jewish, American. I used to get along with her well, she was at my wedding, etc but was always such a FAKE person. For years now she has TRIED to push out the FEW Monolingual teachers like myself. Well, word has it that she is officially making my school BILINGUAL in September which means myself and a few others would be gone. I presume (BETTER) mean I'd just get excessed (again I have 11 years) but I am LIVID, to the point where I want too, and my family agrees I should hire a Lawyer and sue her for discrimination. My UFT rep (who is also one of the Monolingual teachers) is working hard to get answers, find out if she can do this, etc. Isn't each school supposed to have a centain percentage of different ethnic backgrounds of staff memebers?
I just don't know what to do. Let me add that she claims she is retiring in another year but wants to leave a "legacy" here and make the school "she" started solely Bilingual.
Any advice?
THANKS!!!

That does not sound right to me. I have been working 13 years and I have never heard of a school with only bilingual teachers. I would think it would be illegal, discrimanatory. Maybe I have been living under a rock, but I would love to hear what fellow nyc teachers think of this.....weird...deifinitely go past your building Chapter leader and contact your district office.....sounds liek you have a case....good luck

I don't know if she can do that. If the school was opened that way, then maybe... but it doesn't seem right that she can suddenly decide to make the school bilingual and make senior teachers disappear.
Call the UFT and see what they have to say!

Kids test out of ESL/bilingual ed. So you need teachers in the school who can teach them. I don't understand what she's trying to do.

WOW pretty sure she can't do that...problem is I am sure no one will be able to give you a straight answer. Maybe call the borough office yourself also perhaps consulting with a lawyer would not be a bad idea just to get their take on it...
That is BS!!!!!!!!!!!

NEVER heard of a bilingual only school- only schools with a bilingual program. sounds like you could be up for a discrimination suit. get in touch with your district rep, not just your union rep for your building. good luck!
