Can't believe i'm here again UPDATE after D&C
Update after D&C:
Thank you for all your replies ladies. Thanks to you, I was well-prepared for today. Like you all said, the actual procedure was pretty simple. I was talking to my obgyn, then I was waking up after the procedure.
So far, I only have light bleeding and no cramps. I'm pleasantly surprised, but I feel like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. I'm just really tired. My obgyn said to expect it to be like a heavy period. She said I can go to work tomorrow, but I'll see how I feel when I wake up. As far as the emotional piece goes, the past 2.5 weeks have been hellish with being in limbo with my slowly rising betas, so I now feel like I have some closure.
Thanks again to everyone for your well wishes.
Hi Ladies-
I was more active on this board following my 1st m/c in 6/09. I then had a chemical in 6/10, and another this past February. Now, I'm facing my 4th loss, and my first D&C on Wednesday. I am under the care of a RE, and on my 4th round of IUIs, ended up with a nonviable intrauterine pregnancy. I just can't believe that it was my 4th BFP in 2 years, and I'm still not going to have a baby.
Could some of you give me a sense of what to expect from the D&C? I put a call into my obgyn, who is doing the procedure, in order to get some answers. She was great about scheduling it quickly, but we didn't discuss any details. Do I get put under general anesthesia? How long does it take? Can I go to work the next day (my procedure is in the afternoon)?
I've never had any major medical procedure done, and never been in the hospital, so I'm nervous! At this point, I'm less upset about the loss, as I kind of knew it was coming, as my beta was not rising appropriately for the past two weeks, and more nervous about the whole procedure and stressed about missing yet more work.
Sorry this was so long. Thanks for listening and for any experiences you can share with me.

Re: Can't believe i'm here again
I am so sorry for your loss I had my 1st miscarriage on 4/10 and my D&C on 4/11.
It really is not a bad or painful procedure. I had mine done at the hospital (guess some are done in the dr office) --- they took some blood, then they started me on an IV for fluids, right before they took me in they gave me a drug (through IV) that would make me feel a little sleepy. They let my husband walk with the nurse and my hospital bed down the hallway to the operating room. Once I was there they gave me more drugs in the IV and a mask over my face....
I woke up when it was all done in the recovery room and felt fine. They asked if I had any pain and I did not. If I did they would have given me pain medicine. After staying in recover for 15-20 mins they took me back to the room. I had some ginger ale through a straw and felt fine (sad but nothing hurt). The nurse told me as soon as I could pee that we could go. So I drank my ginger ale as fast as I could, went into the bathroom and peed and got dressed. I was bleeding a little bit (wore the hospital pad the first night), the next week I wore pany liners because I would spot here and there.
Feel free to FM if you want to chat and good luck
Heather

Re: Can't believe i'm here again
As for the d&c... It's really really not bad.... At least it wasn't for me.... I took off the next day because I wasn't sure what kind of cramping and stuff I would have but I didn't have anything at all....
I had some cramping as soon as i woke up and took some Tylenol and i was fine the rest of the day... I was nervous too... I never had anestesia before!!
ETA: from the time i left Shaun in the waiting room till the time i woke up was a half hour

Re: Can't believe i'm here again
i am so very sorry.
i would take the next day off for two reasons. one you dont know if you are going to bleed much or feel out of due to the surgery. second you may need to have some down time emotionally.
for me the dnc was scary to have to do it. but in itself wasnt bad at all. i bled alot at the hospital but then barely spotted at home. the next day i felt really funky but i think thats because of exhaustion and emotions. i am so glad i didnt work.
i am very sorry you are going through this.
btw i had mine at a hospital and they did do genetic testing.
i hope this goes quickly as possible for you!

Re: Can't believe i'm here again
I am so sorry for your loss. As far as the D&C goes, everyone's recovery was different. A lot of girls said they went back to work the next day but I needed a few days off but it was probably more for emotional than physical reasons. I was put under general anesthesia and the procedure was about 45 minutes. It's really a minor surgery. I had some cramping after but then I was fine.

Re: Can't believe i'm here again
I'm so sorry. The d&C was really easy. For me the worst part was getting my blood drawn and the iv put in. I didn't feel a thing. I had a really easy recovery..very light bleeding for just a few days and that was it. Maybe 5 days. Not too many cramps either. I had my procedure done at winthrop and the staff was GREAT. I took a few days off of work, but it was more for the emotional part. I was so busy at work, and i just didn't want to deal with it. I would recommend at least taking off one day after the procedure just to take it easy and relax. I'm so so so sorry you have to go through this. My thoughts are with you.

Re: Can't believe i'm here again
Jackie my heart hurts for you - it truly hurts. I have lived through this myself and its a sorority that nobody wants to be a member of.
I had a D and C after my third loss. The procedure was quick and surprisingly enough, I came out of anesthesia well. I had heavy bleeding longer than I expected and that was hard. I went back to work relatively quickly, but I probably should have given myself one more day or at least stayed off my feet. It is important to remember that everyone is different. You may heal better and faster than I did because you are a bit younger than I am.
Please continue to hold on to your faith - it does help. Let Dr. B figure this out. He is well respected and has worked some pretty good miracles. I have complete faith that you will become a mother. I just know it.

Re: Can't believe i'm here again
I am so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it can be!
I had a D&C in Feb 2011 and I think the anticipation of it was much worse than the actual procedure itself. It was very quick and although I felt some bad cramping right after, that was all I felt as far as pain (aside from the pain in my heart ). I happened to have bleeding for weeks after, but I was told that could happen - although I know a lot of people who only had bleeding for a few days.
Anyway, my heart goes out to you. I hope the procedure is quick and painless for you and I hope that you never have to go through this again.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
I had only local anesthesia for my D&C, I was awake for the whole thing. It was much harder for me emotionally than physically. There was some cramping/minor pain during the procedure but the recovery was not bad. The procedure itself only took about 15 mins.

Re: Can't believe i'm here again
It all depends on where you do it.
I was given 2 options for the D&C. One was at the dr office with just some pain killer pills and the other was at the hospital where they knock me out and would do genetic testing. I opted for the hospital because I'd rather be passed out for it and I wanted the genetic testing to be done.
My D&C experience wasn't like any other I've ever read on here. So I don't want to share my full story since you will most likely be like everyone else. But most girls say they had little pain and cramping. I was the COMPLETE opposite. I had intense cramping for a full 10 days and on day 8 I had contraction cramping that I timed and all. I also bled for a long time... a month maybe. I'll just leave it at that.
Good Luck to you. And I'm sooooo sorry for what you are going through.

Re: Can't believe i'm here again
I just want to let you know I am so so so sorry for your loss. Like you, I had no surgeries or anything prior to my D&C. I was petrified of the whole experience...I was especially scared of going under. I had my procedure done at Good Sam and it truly was not bad. Iv, meds to put you under, 20 minutes, done.
The emotional pain far outweighs the physical. I will keep you in my prayers. God bless you.

Re: Can't believe i'm here again
Jax so sorry to see you here. I'm so disappointed and heart broken
First, I'm glad that you chose to have the D&C. I did the "wait and miscarry naturally" option once before and it was horrible. With intense back pain and counting contractions, I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. Second, I've had 3 D&C's and the recovery was different for all 3 despite being the same procedure. Definitely have the procedure in the hospital. I had a great experience at Good Sam. I usually am a mess the entire time, (shocker, I know) so I'm given some meds in my IV to relax me. If you need them, ask. They want you to be as comfortable as you can. The procedure is quick, not long under anesthesia and the recovery in the recovery room is relatively speedy too. Take the pain pills so you can rest easy at home. Take the day off of work so you can take this all in and not have to shower, get dressed, etc. I've had different bleeding episodes, so it all depends on your body and procedure. Be prepared for spotting and heavy flow. Lastly, call me if you need to.

Re: Can't believe i'm here again UPDATE after D&C
I was hoping it would go easy for you....
Maybe because I had a natural m/c and there was only a small amount of tissue left by the time I needed a d&c, but I had very light bleedeing for 2 days and then just brown spotting for 3 or 4 days after that....

Re: Can't believe i'm here again UPDATE after D&C
I am really sorry for your loss! I had a D&C and bled for about two weeks, I felt pretty physically good.
I was advised to take 3-4 weeks off of work, and ultimately took 6 weeks off. Don't rush back to it if you don't feel up to it.
Lots of hugs.

Re: Can't believe i'm here again UPDATE after D&C
Jackie, I am so sorry for everything you have had to go through!
I hope that you are feeling ok, well, as ok as you can be. I just wanted to let you know my experience in case you go through it as well - because I was freaking out a little after my D&C.
Like you said, the procedure was really not too bad. I had mine on a Friday and the day after I flew upstate for a wedding that was on Sunday. I had some light bleeding on Sunday and no real problem with cramps - just a little. I think having something to do and celebrate helped me keep my mind off it a little and physically I felt really ok.
After I got home, maybe starting around Monday night or Tuesday, I started bleeding quite a bit. By mid week I felt like it was a crazy amount and I called my Dr but they said as long as I wasn't going through more then a pad an hour, it was normal. That was the worst part for me and the only reason I am sharing this here is not to scare you, but in case you find that happens, (sounds like from most other people, it isn't usually that heavy) but in case for you it is on the heavier side, maybe you won't get as worried as I was. I think the heavy bleeding lasted at least a week but then tapered off.
Again, many to you.
