Are FDIC and NCUA the same in protection of funds?

I was thinking about opening a TFCU acct but I am a little unclear about protection of funds.

I understand what FDIC is and that your funds are protected in FDIC insured banks. But what about Credit Unions, such as TFCU? Is the NCUA the same concept as FDIC? Are you funds equally protected in a credit union by NCUA? I hope I am being clear in what I am asking.
