Dr. Tina Narayan
Does anyone have feedback or experience with her? She is based at Schneider Children's Hospital (they changed their name recently, but I can't remember it)! She is a developmental pediatrician with a degree in neurology.
We had an appt. for DS to see another doctor in our practice, but had to cancel twice ourselves due to a blizzard and pneumonia, now they had to cancel, so we will be able to see this doctor sooner. Currently I am having DS evaluated through the SD, but I would like to take him to a specialist for another opinion, especially if they tell us he's okay. Which I would love to hear, but in my heart of hearts, I know he is not okay.
Thanks!

No, we haven't been yet. I booked the original appt. months ago, but we had to cancel once due to illness, and they cancelled once due to a blizzard.
We don't see her until June, so I won't have feedback for awhile. Her practice books up, so you might want to make an appt. anyway. You can always cancel if you find someone else you have information about.

On a search, I found this.
Noah has an appointment with her next week.
Any info would be great if anyone ultimately had an appointment with her.
Like her? Experience etc?
thanks sooo much.

We were recommended to Cohen's LIJ by preschool and SD over Cody center, bc we are not pdd.
I hope your appt goes well, we still have a while until our appt.

Re: Dr. Tina Narayan
I thought she was ok, definitely better than the stories. I have heard of some specialists. But I still think the SD did a much more thorough evaluation. Hers was quick, and she just could not see all the issues since she didn't observe him in a school setting (none of these doctors can really), though I thought her evaluation of his play skills was cursory at best.
I was fine with her though, because we already had a PDDNOS diagnosis by the time we had the appt, which she agreed with, and at that point I wanted to get him assessed for seizure or other neurological issues. We are going back Tues., I see possible signs of Tourette's or something similar.
Good luck, I hope the appt is helpful!

Re: Dr. Tina Narayan
Just wanted to add, I think the difference between the two evaluations we had for DS (the school district and Dr. Narayan) was this--she focused more on medical issues, the school district focused more on behaviors or deficits that would hamper his ability to do well in school. In my son's case, I was more concerned about the latter when I sought an evaluation, so this might be part of the reason I preferred the SD evaluation.
Good luck!

when you say School district evaluation , what do you mean exactly...what "type" of eval and when was it done? And by whom?
All Noah has had is speech and O/T by the current O/T and SLP he see's. I guess this is because really he has no diagnose other then speech delayed, fine motor delay and 'possible' sensory issues? I can find no-one willing to address the issues developing educationally.
We had our intial appnt today and I have to say I didnt like her and am saddened by that. I felt like she wasnt listening too well , and had pre conceived opinions already. This appointment was a waste of time, all she did was tell me what we would do in the NEXT appointment, I left with teh checklists to give to the teachers, those could havebeen int he packet and filled out weeks ago and brought in with me today. She weighed him, and did Bloodpressure and showed him the room we would be in NEXT time and that was it, and dH was mad he took a half day off work to drive an hr for a 10 min. appointment.
Anyway, I will give her the benefit of the doubt, But I see what you mean as she said we will be doing a lot of bloodwork.

Donna, has no one suggested that he have a special ed evaluation? My DS is on the spectrum and he was referred by one of his EI therapists for a special ed eval, since she had some concerns. The special ed evaluator then suggested a child psych eval, which resulted in him receiving a diagnosis. If I were you, I would ask the district to do a special ed eval. It sounds like you have lots of concerns that would warrant one if you haven't already had one.

Agree. You definately should ask for a special ed and psych eval. They may fight you on it but keep pushing for it. Its your right to get all the evals you think you need.

Re: Dr. Tina Narayan
No...No one ever suggested it .
When he started with EI he had a pysch eval , and they determined he was not on the spectrum and of average intelligence. That was that. It was noted he had sensory issues and anxiety issues.
I didnt even know there was such a thing. Now it makes sense.
His Special Ed teacher writes up a report attesting time. Maybe he has had an eval through her? and I am not sure what it is exactly? I just always saw it as her 'report'.
Could you tell me what the special ed eval is, or comprises of a bit?
I think I have been way too lax on my end and now that the time has come to Kindergarten where he will be thrown into it so to speak I am realizing how many issues there are and I dont know where to turn, who will listen.
Ok..ADVICE.....He has his yearly testing next week for Speech, and O/t...How would I request these other evals? Does it need to be at the same time or can I request them and they do it at a later date.
I am so lost.
With EI I had the coordinator and a parent trainer to guide me. Now I feel so lost and I dont liek the social worker at the school.
I REALLY appreciate all the help everyone is giving me.

Don't worry about sounding stupid - they have seen and heard it all, I am sure. Your only concern is getting Noah what he needs.
From what I remember, the special ed eval was a lot of floor play and the teacher asking us questions. Sort of like a warm up for the psych eval, but if I remember correctly, during the psych eval we had to answer a lot more questions. My DS was also only 2 when he had the eval, so it will probably be a little different since Noah is 4, but generally, I think they are checking to see what his skill set is, both cognitively and socially.
I think this is a good time to request the evaluation. He will be transitioning to CSE and they should be able to do it along with his yearly testing to prepare for the transition meeting.
If I were you, I would also see if I could get parent training NOW. They probably won't want to give it to you for Kindergarten, but they might give it to you for the rest of this year and summer. It sounds like you need someone to help you at home and figuring out how to help him at home and with school.

Re: Dr. Tina Narayan
My dd is in CPSE and receives OT, ST, and SPED. I received a form from the district letting me know that her yearly review was approaching and that I had to sign this particular sheet so she can be "evaluated". I wasn't sure who she was going to be evaluated by but as it turns out her SEIT therapists will be conducting the 'testing'. (there are set tests they have to administer).
I would call your SD and ask about the yearly evaluations and perhaps ask if you can have testing done in other areas if you would like (for instance, special ed )
This is different than their quarterly reports. It's official testing.

Re: Dr. Tina Narayan
Don't worry at all about sounding stupid, no one understands how all of this works unless someone is good enough to lead them through the process! Many . It's confusing in the beginning, and more so if the SD isn't that helpful.
Here's what I would request in a School District evaluation--OT, Speech, special education, and a psychological evaluation which will be done by a psychologist. Either the SD has someone who does them for the district, or they will refer you to an agency that does. I would also request PT if you have any concerns at all about gross motor delays or physical problems (lack of balance, etc.). When you request the evaluations, tell them your worst fear, whether you think it's autism or ADHD, make it clear that this is serious. Go with examples, and ask his teacher for examples of ways his behavior affects his ability to do well in school. That's what the CPSE committee is interested in knowing--will Noah be able to go to school in the Fall and keep up with his class? Is he going to be disruptive? Will he have difficulty transitioning? Anything you can think of that applies, share with them and demand that they evaluate him.
I'm sorry you didn't like Dr. Narayan, my experience was similar, but then I didn't read good reviews about any of the specialists in the area. We went back with a concern about Tourette's, and with that, I have to say she was much more helpful. Maybe ASDs really aren't her thing, I'm not sure. She was nice to my son, and that counted for something, sadly since I've heard horror stories about how some doctors treat children.
Good luck, and fm if you have questions! If you are having trouble with the social worker at the SD, I would call the SEPTA group for your school and see if they can offer assistance or suggestions.

Re: Dr. Tina Narayan
Ok...THANK YOU ALL!!
The SEPTA rec is a good idea.
I 'wish' we still had parent trtaining. The parent training at his school is done by the social worker, the one I dont like. She is right out of school, very VERY young, laughs a lot , like everythings funny and forgets who I am every time I call I have to go through who I am alllll over again, her advice is never age appropriate.
plus I hung up on her the other day basically, she probably doesnt like me too much now. lol
So Lastyear Noahs teachers were AMAZING, so willing to help, assist me. Not so much this yr :( I dont like his teachers at all, but I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. As I see it, this is a big class for them, its loud and Noah gets overlooked. They tell me he listens and is great. Its because he sits in the corner, does nothing unless asked and then does well becuase he is scared of doing wrong. They do not know him AT ALL. And I feel their eval's fail him in that regard as they really do not even understand him.
I have brought up my concerns, and the spec ed teacher seems to always act as if I am blaming her, or telling her its her fault, she gets super defense, even when I plain old say I need help for US, ME, she is perfect, doing perfect....she tells me he does things he is not capable of.
I will see what shes writes in his book today, I asked her to call me as well to find out about the testing.
Dr. Narayan was nice to Noah as well, and yes I guess thats a huge plus and I am more or less so frustrated with everyone right now that I am not giving people a fair chance, because my expectations are super high and thats unreasonable in some respects, so I will lighten up a bit
I appreciate you guys so much
THANK you for answering my questions and reading my long winded posts

DS is in CPSE and we get Parent Training at home. I was told by many people we would lose it, but we didn't. I think they are required to offer it once a month for kids on the spectrum, but it wouldn't hurt to ask them for it. They want him to do well once he transitions to Kindergarten and maybe they will give it to you through the summer to help prepare him.
It's worth a shot, I think. If they won't give it to you, you could look into having someone come and pay privately, even if it's just for once a week. We have weeks where everything is going well, but then we have weeks where I am really glad we have the parent trainer. Also, if you can get someone soon, she/he can help you figure out what to ask for as far as services for next year, and even participate in the IEP meeting with you.

You are more than welcome, and I will say it again, please don't feel stupid for asking questions. It would be foolish or remiss not to ask--you are smart and being a great Mommy by learning more about this process.
I would tell the school that your son sits in the corner and is not part of the group. If he is either unable to communicate due to speech delays, anxiety issues, or whatever you suspect the problem is, let them know that he is not participating except under duress. Maybe the class is too large for him also? It sounds as if he may need more one-on-one help than he is getting this year. If his special education teacher isn't very helpful, I would also ask teacher aides, therapists, or anyone else who works with him for input. They may provide different answers.
And if you don't like Dr. Narayan, see if you can see someone else if the school district doesn't provide any answers. I would do that next though. The other thing that is good is that they will probably order a classroom observation, which will bring some of his issues to light. It was more obvious that something wasn't working for my son in this part of the report--he does pretty well one on one with adults.
Again, many and I hope you find some answers soon.
