I am a kindergarten playdate novice...Help !

So DS has apparently been plotting and planning playdates with his little class friend....DS has been to this boys house once and now he wants him over ours....

They have already decided that his buddy is going to come home on the bus with him Chat Icon

Spoke to the mom who is ok with this...Now what ?

How long should the playdate be?

Does the mom pick the boy up or is that my responsiblity usually Chat Icon

Anything else I should do Chat Icon ?

My house is upside down and I have a 2yo and a newborn, needless to say I kinda want to strangle my DS Chat Icon , but he's super excited so I have to deal Chat Icon

You will have to get permission from the school to let the other child come home on the bus with yours. They do not normally allow this unless you are the caregiver for the other child or unless the other child is NORMALLY on the same bus.

I'd say end it at the 2 hour mark.

The mom should pick him up.

We are still dealing with pre-K playdates but I think they are the same Chat Icon . We have been doing a lot of play ground playdates. If possible, the child is picked up after about 2 hours from the playground if it is not too inconvenient. Today I dropped off a child after the play date because both parents work and it was on my way home.

Here's my after school playdate schedule:

- bus drops off around 3:25 pm
- come inside, go potty and wash hands
- snack (healthy, nothing too sugary to avoid crazy kids)
- after snack I strongly encourage them to do some HW Chat Icon
- after snack and HW there's usually about an hour left of play. Now that it's warmer I encourage outside play no minimize an indoor mess
5:00-5:30 - request that parent pick-up their DC

I would speak to the transportation company & the school first. As the pp said they dont' normally allowed a child to ride on a bus that isn't their normal bus and the bus driver shouldnt' be letting a child off the bus if it isn't his stop so double check.

I think 2-3 hours is plenty of time, depending of course on the playdate. I've had playdates for 6 hours & ones that I wanted picked up after 20 mintues, but sucked it up for the 2 hour markChat Icon Chat Icon.

Off the bus, I'd do wash-up, then snack. I'd also check on the homework (unless it's Friday) as it may be harder for to get a kid to settle down for homework after he's tired .

Also check with the mom whether she can pick him up & what time. If it's going well, I'd even consider inviting him to stay for dinner to give the mom a break.

Thanks all Chat Icon

The mom has a 5th grader and she claims that having her DS ride my DS's bus is as easy as her writing a note and handing it in to the teacher (Her DS is a walker )

I let her know that I am a newbie to this whole thing and to pardon my ignorance Chat Icon

Ok, so 2 hours seems like the norm..I'd do the dinner thing but TBH I'm lucky my own kids get fed these days (I kid), but it does get hairy here at mealtime so I may forego that this time around...I'll have a snack all set...

As for HW, I think I'm in the clear because the kids get sent home with a packet on Mondays thats collected the following Monday with 1 months HW in it and thats kept at home.... Playdate is set for a Friday

Thanks all Chat Icon

That may be true for a 5th grader, but a kindergartener is a whole other story. I would put a call into the school to confirm this, because in my district, "walkers" are not allowed on any bus unless they have a bus pass. A note from home won't cut it.

In DD's school you can go home on another kids bus with a simple note from mom or dad.(even in kindergarten)
At that age we usually ended playdates just before dinner(maybe 5-5:30ish)
The other parent picks up.
