SPINOFF: Abuse of handicap permit?

Apparently this is a hot topic and I was discussing it with a friend of mine from work...

What would you do if you knew someone who had a handicap permit from a prior (like a decade ago) surgery, but now wears 4 inch heels to her job (for which she stands ALL DAY), and still uses the handicapped permit to this day?

As I mentioned the surgery was many years ago, and she appears to walk just fine in her huge heels, doesn't limp, doesn't show any signs of being handicapped....

Would you report it or let it lie?

Re: SPINOFF: Abuse of handicap permit?

They usually have expiration dates.

It's really hard to get a permanent sticker for a surgery.

I feel like some people must just get doctors they know to keep writing the notes.

Perhaps she has some other disability you don't know about?

There is a whole load of paperwork to fill out. It's not "that" easy! It's issued by the State.

I don't know.

It's of course possible, but one would think if you can stand on your feet in heels for 8 hours a day, you can walk an extra 20 feet for parking?

I'm not necessarily the type to report people, but I'm interested in people's opinions on the matter.

I wouldn't do anything, because the person may have some other type of disability.

Unless someone straight-out declares that they are abusing their sticker/tag, then I try not to pass judgment and just remain thankful that I don't need one of those stickers/tags.

It's not that hard to get a temp handicapped sticker. Atleast in the town of brookhaven. All that you have to do is have the dr sign a piece of paper and write the reason. Bring it to the town and you get a temp handicapped permit.
It's very easy IMO to get one in our town and there are alot of dr's out there who will just sign the papers. There are other dr's that won't. Depends on who you go to and how much of a PIA you are. IMO. i know many people who have no handicap but their dr's sign the paper for them every year.

Re: SPINOFF: Abuse of handicap permit?

I think it really depends on the municipality. When I could barely walk I was told by my doctors not to bother trying to get a permit because it's impossible in NYC, but I have heard in some areas of LI it's easy. I also know from my job in education that it's sad but true that kids who need accommodations don't get them because there are a lot of kids who pay psychologists to invent or exaggerate disabilities to give them an edge.

So I'm pretty cynical about things like that.

Re: SPINOFF: Abuse of handicap permit?

I asked bc my MIL has a sticker bc she has epilepsy, but if you saw her just walking around, she looks fine. (My MIL is also not allowed to drive, but can use the sticker when we drive her).

Maybe she has a neurological disorder?

Jennifer, I think handicapped permits should be re-evaluated on a timely basis. (Perhaps they are). Mary

I wonder if relatives of deceased handicapped placard holders, use the handicapped placards after the relative dies, or does the State require them to be sent in, or what?

I wouldn't pass judgement.

My little sister was almost killed by a drunk driver 14 years ago. After the jaws of life cut her out of her car, the doctors at the hospital did what they could to fix her legs, but her ankle was crushed. She basically has a barbie doll foot that stays in 1 position. She can't wear flats because her foot won't go in that position. So she wears heals because that is what she can get her foot in, and she walks with less of a limp this way.

To look at her getting out of her car (with it's legal handicapped parking permit) - young, blond and pretty. You would never know the countless hours of pain, physical therapy and pain mangement that she goes thru. How many more surgeries even 14 years later that she still needs. So no, I dont judge. I assume that the person has it because they NEED it.

To you and others, you all are correct!!! One cannot tell just by looking at a person, re: their handicap. Folks with heart issues also might have a placard. I'm so sorry your Sister went through that, hon!!!! Hugs!!! Mary

Re: SPINOFF: Abuse of handicap permit?

I think the issue here....I don't know first hand, since it's a coworker I was discussing it with and I don't know this woman personally

is that the placard is for people who are incapable of walking far, but she demonstrates daily that she can walk and stand on her feet in heels.

I know the general person you can absolutely not judge because you don't know if they're picking someone up, or whatever, but in this case, the person has demonstrated she CAN stand and walk...like on the other post where the person had a placard and used it to park at the gym to go kickboxing.

I really think both things happen. SOme people abuse it, while there others who are legitimately entitled to it but may not seem so...

WOW.

*hugs*

I never would have thought there would be a medical reason to wear high heels.
