SO DONE!

I'm soo frustrated!!!!

I've been on unemployment for too long! I'm not going to be allowed to be on it much longer for sure. I have been filling out applications like crazy! On average about 10 a week for this 2011 year so far!! I finally get ONE phone interview... which I was sooo nervous for! Yep...just got the email that I am not what they are looking for!! Chat Icon I NEVER had a problem getting a job in the past, but now it's sooo scary out there!! DH is already working 3 jobs, and barely making our bills...I don't know what we'll do when unemployment stops as well.

I need evening / night hours b/c we have a 15 month old DS. The jobs I've been looking for were FT 4:30 till 1am. Would have been PERFECT! Just needed a sitter for 2 hours 3 days a week...which we can in fact afford! We can't afford daycare...and there's no one (family or friends) that can do it M-F 9-5 for low pay.

Should I just go to retail? I only ever worked retail for a month of my life and HATED it! But I'm seeing that there is NOTHING else out there! I'm trying NOT to beat myself up about this, but how can I not? I was the bread winner before I got laid off.... to believe I used to have a large savings account.... could go out to eat just b/c I felt like it... could go shopping b/c I was in the mood...AUGH! That life is light years away now!

What should I do? I'm really trying to keep my head up, but going on a year and a half being told NO in a nice way is getting the best of me. What am I doing wrong? What should I do? I feel so lost! We need for me to get SOMETHING!

Thanks for letting me vent!

Re: SO DONE!

I soo hear ya..I too was laid off in feb and couldnt even get a job with in the company I was laid off from!!!Chat Icon
I filled out apps just like you waiting for the email or phone call. Even discovered a scam through local paper help wanted...ridiculious!
Im pretty new w/the UE benefits so I stopped going bonkers looking for a job that wld come close to my old salary (light yrs away....). Retail and overnight stock ppl is all I see out there these days.
Do your #'s if your working to just pay for daycare or cant find a night job what ya going to do?its not worth it..its hard these days to find a decent job with decent pay.

Good Luck with everything and remember your not alone..Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: SO DONE!

Thanks! It's sooo hard! I was laid off for no real reason in Nov 2009!! I was 6 months pregnant! They gave me no warning...no reasoning... no opportunity for other jobs within the company... etc. I started seriously looking once my son was born. I did inquire with a few places before his arrival, but I knew none would hire a 3rd trimester preggo even tho it IS law. So here I am struggeling, stalking all job boards such as Job Finer and Craigs List even. It's unreal! I jsut feel so lost. We are going to lose our house, we are in debt up to our ears, I just don't know what to do anymore. Feels better to vent it out, but still...doesn't solve anything.

If you are looking for nightime work, instead of retail you should look into waitressing. I know its not ideal, but you will make a lot more money than retail!

Re: SO DONE!

How about trying to get a job in a daycare or somewhere you could bring DS with you?

Re: SO DONE!

I have thought about waitressing...but don't you need experience? I have NEVER done that...or anything remotly close to that! HA! I guess it's worth a shot... ! About how much do you really make doing that? I know retail I will start at 11/95 an hour... how do tips and such work out? Just curious.

I have thought about getting something in daycare, went on a few interviews for the ones near me, and they told me I would need to be certified first, which I'm fine doing...but DS will be only discounted, not free. I was thinking of doing at home child care, and I bring DS with me to sorta be a nanny...but that hasn't worked out yet either.

Thanks for the ideas !! Keep them coming!!

Re: SO DONE!

Check out home care agencies. A lot of them need someone reliable to work after 5PM and on the weekends, answering the phone and making sure the cases are staffed properly, emergencies are folllowed up via phone and documented, etc.

The pay is not great.........I know the agency I work for starts around $12.00 an hour.......but it's the type of role that agencies are usually always looking to fill.

Where I work they usually hire newer grads without a whole lot of experience.

Re: SO DONE!

Thanks!!

My house is tiny...plus we rent... I don't think I'll be allowed to do that. Believe me, it's crossed my mind, but every time I search information about it, I get told it won't work.

Thanks...but I need to be at least bring home what I"m bringing home in UE. I'm really thinking waitressing... then I'll do it PT...but I just don't know how pay works out for that...

I'm in farmingville...near Selden area. My DH works M-F 3am till 6pm and then Sat morns 3am till 9am...so I'd need something towards the evening... such as starting at 4ish or so, till like 1am. That way I can just hire a sitter for 2/3 hours a day, and not have my entire pay check go towards day care.

I mainly have been in customer service... started at a dry cleaners when I was 16, then moved up to a bank teller when I was 18... I was that until 21 when I became customer service rep at the bank... then I transferred jobs to a pharmaceutical company starting as the receptionist for 3 months...then international customer service...to finally asst. I.T. in which I was laid off after 9 months. Anything that I bring home at least $380 and more with those hours I'll take! I mean, still a HUUUGE pay cut from what I had, but UE is giving me $350 and that's just not enough!. My poor DH is working THREE jobs. I think it may be time to move out of NY soon. Chat Icon

Re: SO DONE!

Another post on this board... is looking for PT and FT daycare workers -- so maybe you can bring your child with you while you work?

In response to the waitress question, some places you can get hired w no experience. I worked at 2 chain type restUrants and on a sat nite would make usually 125-150 in tips. But that's only really 6 hours or so of work. Plus it's cash in hand. You could also try catering.

Re: SO DONE!

I know the diner in Holbrook on Main street trains people on the job. Maybe you can try there.

Re: SO DONE!

Thanks for all the suggestions!!!

The daycare I would LOVE...but my DS isn't going to be 2 by Sept., and also you need to be going to school for education... which I do not plan on doing at all. Plus, I couldn't afford going to school right now LOL

125 for 6 hours..? yeah, I think I can swing that!! LOL. I mean, that's only for a Sat night... but maybe I can become a bartender over time as well. Just at least it's 'something'. I'll check out the place in Holbrook. I've never been at a job with food...so this should be interesting.
