For anyone who thinks teenagers are self-absorbed...
They need to come meet my students.
(This is not a shameless post, btw... I just had to share how lucky I feel right now.)
So today's my birthday, and I got four e-mails from current students wishing me a happy birthday. How they remembered this enough on a Sunday to send me a message (and how some of them even knew at all) is beyond me, but they really made my day. I can't believe how lucky I am to work with kids like them.

I've said it already, but happy ! This story doesn't surrpise me in the slightest. You already know I don't think teens are self-absorbed, but having such a gifted, caring teacher can't hurt either
Hope you had a great day!

Happy Birthday!!
You are lucky to have such non self absorbed kids. Mine totally are!! I was out for a week recently due to a pregnancy loss and then the loss of my grandfather. They were told I was out because I was sick. When I walked in Monday morning, they didn't even ask how I was Anyway ....... This was a self absorbed comment, I didn't mean to take away from your post!!

Re: For anyone who thinks teenagers are self-absorbed...
That's so nice!!
We had a similar moment tonight - I was out with my husband and his family for dinner for his birthday and a student who my husband taught at his old school about 3 years ago came over to our table, he was out with his family, and told him how much everyone misses him at their school and how he's hoping to go to college at NYIT and all these nice things... it really made my night probably more than my husband's because I'm so proud of the impact he has on these kids. Even when they're being evil teenagers they will someday grow up to appreciate what you've been doing all this time
