DDI Huntington or Ship Program?

Does anyone have any experience with these programs?

We were approved for 1/2 day integrated class. I know the recent DDI post had mixed opinions. never heard of Ship program (So Huntington).

I don't have info on the ship program but I think it's pre k. For 4 year olds. Are you in this district? My older son is starting Oakwood for kindergarten in September.

I'm not, but I guess they accept other TOH residents, since my SD (HF) recommended. DS is 4 - one more year to Kindergarten

Re: DDI Huntington or Ship Program?

I'm touring DDI in Huntington on Tuesday. The Starting Early Program. I live in Port Jeff, but work in Harborfields (hope to have your son one day in PE, Erica) so I am going to see if it's a good fit for us.

I have one at WDPS. Where are you?

I asked our SPED director and she was saying good things about SHIP...so we are looking there (as well as DDI) and also Building Blocks in Commack.

Re: DDI Huntington or Ship Program?

I am at the high school now. I was at WDPS six years ago.

I will post back Tuesday after I visit DDI. My brother-in-law teaches in the same building, but the Childrens Day Services part. He got to observe and he said it was very well run.

Re: DDI Huntington or Ship Program?

I toured the DDI Starting Early program in Huntington. It seems like a fantastic program.

The classes are 6:1:3.5 (they have 3 full-time TA's and one part-time).

They have 4 Autism classes and 6 integrated ones.

They integrate them right away. She said it may be 5-minutes or up to 4-hours (they are sent with a TA into the integrated class to shadow them). It's whatever the child can handle. This was a big selling point for me. We have him down for NIS, but they don't integrate the Autism classes at all.

They have library and gym. They have an incredible age-appropriate playground that is only used by the Starting Early classes. They have 2 other playgrounds for the older classes.

They have Team meetings once every 6-weeks, they have support groups for parents monthly, and they have Parent Participation Tuesdays where they encourage you to visit your child's classroom and see how he/she is doing.

They are an extended 48-week program with an 8-week summer program. They do not have a winter break in February and have a limited Spring break.

The hours are 9:30-3:30pm. That is for the Autism classes though. I am not sure about the Integrated ones.

thanks for the report. DH is going next week to look at a few places.

on a side note, I'm sure you know this already, but did you know that was a district elementary school? I went to TJL, but I remember the kids at Little Plains yelled before the memorial day parade "TJL, go to hell" nice huh...funny what you remember!
