Neurologist who specializes in speech disorders

Anyone have a rec so I can see if they are in our ins plan? DS goes to K in the Fall and the SD will not give him PROMPT therapy that seems to be doing so much more than traditional speech therapy did. His current SLP called his condition apraxic which was never said before her so I don't have a diagnosis, which I would assume my ins would need to be able to get any coverage of continued PROMPT for him/

I'm in Nassau so it's preferable but I can travel on a strong rec.

Dr. Marilyn Agin, in Manhattan is a neurodevelopmental ped who specializes in apraxia (and other speech disorders). I am not sure how much her evaluation costs but if you have out of network coverage they send out the paperwork.

A PROMPT certified slp can also diagnose him.

We use Dr. Agin. We saw her for an initial eval 4 years ago and it was about 2,500. Her follow ups are in the1,000-1,500 range.
She wrote the book the Late Talker.
Fm me if you have any questions. You might want to call her office for a recommendation on Long Island..she is usually great with that since she books about 2 months out.

Actually if your son is apraxic, this is the one thing that SLP's do diagnose....over neurologists and so on. If you are seeing a PROMPT certified therapist they should definitely be able to guide you in this...

Any recommendations for a pediatric neurologist in Nassau? It was strongly recommended to me today that I take my DC. My DD is in EI and the team all want it done asap and think apraxia.

I am new to this and didn't know how to bump. Dr. Agin costs $3K for the evaluation and I am just wondering if i will also get specific recommendations or is it just evaluation and we are still on our own. All the books are telling me about a window of opportunity and the need to move fast and whenever I make an appt anywhere the delay is so great (Agin would be mid-Nov) and I just feeling like I am failing my dc. Trying to work out a treatment plan and my EI therapists are defensive. I think everyone is doing all they can, but just slow. Recommended 11 weeks ago that my dc get upped services for special Ed and still nothing. They say paperwork, but I just wish I could push it harder.

Are you on Long Island ? Did your EIOD send you an ammendment letter regarding increasing services ? As soon as that's sent to you, it usually takes the county a few days to "Okay" it. Then tell your EIOD to call the agency you are working with to find you more therapists. You can also ask your EIOD to blast it out to all agencies.... Finding therapists can be difficult when noone is truly 'working' on it. Hound the agency coordinator to make sure they are looking...it then takes another 2 weeks to usually get the calendar passed through quality assurance so the the therapist can have an authorization number. It's a lot of "waiting" and "wasting time". But you are not failing your child because you are trying to problem solve and come up with a plan. The right situation will work itself out. Make sure your dd has a great team of therapists that are open minded and willing to figure out what works. Communication between therapists works best.

I am increasing a current therapist (adding an extra session a week), so you would think it would be faster. Both the therapist and I signed the paperwork after our coordinator ok'd. Hoping it comes through soon because this therapist is really good with my DC - a little tougher and no nonsense which is good. Seems like I have a good team but I currently have a total of 5 sessions (45 minutes each) a week (3 different therapies, only one is more than once a week at this time) and then I read about people with 6-8 hours a week and that it is easier to get services while still in EI, so that makes me nervous as my DC will age out later this year.

Just waiting to hear re evaluations and meeting for next stage.
